Traders and Gunboats - Has Landed!

You see, you have answered already :)

<Zho precog alert>

More seriously there will come a point where the starship design rule options are spread across so many supplements, adventures and JTAS articles that another edirion of High Giard, a third edition, will become necessary so that authors have the tools they need in one easy to refence place.

If only there was a portentous year coming up where a brand new edition of Mongoose Traveller could be part of the celebratory event...

and it better include a Bu and Embla coffee table art book, a Visual guide to Traveller, the same landscape format as This is Free Trader Beowulf to keep it company on my shelves (may need another set of shelves soon).
Funny I don’t see Shadowrun having to write a book with all the characters options in it. Or any number of other RPGs or Wargames. They are called supplements for a reason they add extra options that are not in the core books. Guess you don’t understand that concept

I have always been against putting rules in JTAS and/or spreading them around in a million different books. This makes the game harder to play as intended, if you want to use RAW. It is getting to the point that we need to be librarians to even know where all of the rules are, not to mention the cost of having to buy all of these books just to have all of the Traveller base rules. This applies to ship components as well. Look at Behind the Claw where it has the TL-16 ship equipment from Vincennes. This should be in HG, not in a setting book, since these components are not setting-specific.

IMO, all of the Traveller rules should be in a limited number of Traveller rulebooks. All of the setting-specific rules should be in the very first setting book of the setting. Any optional rules or variant rules can be put in JTAS and/or a book such as the Traveller Companion.

Although that is just My 2 cents.

I couldn't care less what Shadowrun does or doesn't do. I guess the company is not interested in making things easily accusable to the player base, or just want to fleece the maximum amount of revenue.
Or any number of other RPGs or Wargames.
Those too. If they want to be an inconsistent scattered mess that is on them.

I'm so glad you explained the concept, now I can sleep easy.

No, I am far too stupid to understand, I am so glad you are here to provide enlightenment.

Mongoose produced a second edition of HG, one of the stated aims was to bring together the options that had appeared in the various supplements and adventures. As a courtesy and as a way of providing a framework for future authors so they wouldn't have to purchase every single MgT product to find the esoteric rules scattered hither and yon.

At present to fully access ship construction when writing an adventure or supplement for publication you would need:
core rule book
high guard
great rift
deapnight revelation
element class cruisers
traders and gunboats (or several JTAS issues)
and a few others I can't be bothered to go dig out.

There will come a point no doubt when Mongoose will write a third edition and those scattered rules will be collected again, then the process will begin again of authors introducing new rules scattered hither and yon.

I was trying to find the rules on EM hardening yesterday. Failed. I know they exist but not where. There needs to be a compilation pdf for all of the rules not in High Guard. Or at least a master index to tell me where to look.

Edit: Someone helped me find them.

More in JTAS then just the laser stuff for ships.

Can add:
The Great Rift (book 4)
Aliens of Chartered Space (1-4)
Pirates of Drinax - Ships of the Reach
Spinward Extents
Sword Worlds
The Glorious Empire
The Trailing Frontier
Behind the Claw
Small Craft Catalogue

Updated High Guard page: 61 Hardened System.

My understanding is that their current plan is to avoid a 3rd edition unless there comes a point that they they are making a major departure from existing rules. So we'll probably see "High Guard 2026 Update" or something along those lines.

Well currently there are three different editions of MgT High Guard with different rules in each.

They can call the next one an update if they like, but to me it will be a 4th edition.
