Traders and Gunboats - Has Landed!

A Compleat Index is realistically possible, that lists where specific gear and rules appear in new publications.

I kinda doubt there will be a Compendium, like in GURPS.

Since they had a complete index for the most recent Kickstarter as a stretch goal, they may be testing the idea.

True, and before the only option was to print new, updated editions. Now electronic updates can be made and downloaded in addition to the old way.
Except mongoose still needs to make their money if for no on their reason than to pay the writers and if you updated Highguard every time you add new ship tech they would sell a lot less product. Sometimes I think that too many members of this forum don’t understand this reality.

I guess you didn't read My previous post about charging for the updates?

An alternative is to adopt a subscription model for digital only content where updates are provided as soon as available coupled with PoD option

The current PDF release then wait months for hard-copy is rapidly becoming a thing of the past

I'd rather pay for each updated book individually, but I see no reason why they couldn't offer both options.

Not sure where you got that ideal. It’s still the standard in TTRPGs.

Not really viable people don’t want to pay for their PDFs every year just to get an update. Truthfully mongoose is doing nothing wrong or different from every other gaming company.

Not really a viable alternative. In the end to keep operating mongoose needs to sell the new books it doesn’t help them at all to do things like this that will cut into sales of the new book.

A new edition of High Guard would make them more money, so your point is moot.

Mongoose only recently adopted it. Up until last year they were sending the product to print and releasing the pdf concurrently. As a result erros were spotted in the pdf that were already baked into the peint copy.
It only took a year of complaints and suggestions before they finally adopted the pdf release->error check by purchasers->corrections made->off to the printer.
And as usual you are making up things that are easily fchacked and shown to be your opinio rather than fact. Certain companies release pdfs ling before printing so they can have us error check, but the biggest selling game does not.

I have suggested a subscription model tongue in cheek since I buy everything they put out these days, there were a few people who in all seriousness said they would do this too.

There are a couple of game subscription services.

An then there is the massive push for D&D Beyond subscription.

You have no idea. Again it is your opinion and gut feeling with no data to back it up.
A subscription model would bring in additional revenue and may bring in new customers not interested in buying the books.
The books would still be bought, the pdf sales would continue, the subscription would generate additional revenue.

Whilst my personal preference is not to go subscription based, if done properly and not used to gouge enthusiasts then I see merit

We all have a vested interest in keeping Traveller thriving. I would support a small subscription as an altruistic endeavour if available

JTAS could move to a subscription model, you subscribe and receive an issue every 2 months, that sort of thing.

I would subscribe to a Bu and Embla travel magazine...

and I am still waiting for Bu and Embla's FFW dispatches...

Fantasy Grounds has a subscription model that I 'sort of' like that would fit well with Mongoose.

They have an Art Subscription of $50 a year to get every art pack (for creating maps primarily but they now also to portraits) that they have ever made, with new ones coming out every month.

What I dislike about it is that if you give up the subscription then the art goes away.

I like @Sigtrygg 's idea of the old fashioned magazine subscription but in digital form. Pay Mongoose X amount every month for a digital book every other month. You keep the book even if you discontinue the subscription. This model allows Mongoose to take in money up front for expenses and could incentivize the graphic novels and JTAS to be on a more regular release schedule.

Not all of us are enthused with subscriptions.
I would not pay a subscription for Traveller, but I would pay for updates, that way I only pay for updates for the books that I use. Although, I can see other people who would like the subscription model. Offer both, it costs nothing extra if set up and priced right.
