The first entry "2D6" is the sneak attack damage he would do with any other weapon OTHER THAN SHORT SWORD.

The second entry "2D8" is the sneak attack damage you would aply to sneak attacks done with SHORT SWORD.

Don't forget to aply the weapons own damage and STR mod as well, as the previous poster pointed out.

So in answer to your last question: He would deal 1d8+STR MOD+2D8 if Sneak Attacking with a Short Sword.

that is what i though, so the example in the book of the pirate/thief on the sneak style is wrong?
one of my playesrs is making a case based on that example,
the example is adding all the dice.
is that error listed in the errata?

They mentioned that this example (like many others) is in error.
