The Dark Horse Conan Sourcebook

Hey there Raven, and hello Vincent ...

Did someone say that they were going to do up the transforming Witch-woman that appeared in the first Conan movie No1?

What would 'she/it' be Classed as ??? Lycanthrope-Witch?

I must say that there's considerable discrepancy between Director's visions and what was actually described in Stories, although I DO need to dust off and start re-reading my vast Conan book collection that I started when I was 18yo ... (Damn, I'm now 44 ...)

I just started reading the : 'Legends of Kern' Volume 1 ('Age of Conan Hyborian Adventures'), "The Blood of Wolves" by Loren L. Coleman., published by Ace Books, New York.

Good Work Everyone, I must catch up with some of the latest RPG releases, with NPC's being the prime consideration right now. The Aquilonia S/Bk is next ... I still need to get a damned Gm's Screen too - Arrrrrrggggh!

Damn Raven! Have you thought about working for Mongoose or something? Congrats!

Ian and I have too many artistic differences to work well together I think. Namely I'd never produce anything involving a scantily clad woman and that's likely a requirement for any sort of Conan book of any sort....8)

Oh and Thanks Loki. Been a while since you've been on.

Hi Raven,

Just wanted to say I'm really enjoying the write-ups of the DH Conan series, and am really looking forward to your version of Janissa!

I noticed that there was a nod to the DH series version of the Hyperboreans in "Hyboria's Finest."

A number of people have been looking forward to my version of Janissa- the ultimate 'love her or hate her' character created by Busiek. I will do my best not to disappoint....

I noticed that too. Vincent was kind to adknowledge the new comic which I believe a number of people on this forum haven't taken as canon themselves.

As a child I didn't grow up with comics (in fact, I was forbidden to read/have them at home on threat of corporal punishment), but since Dark Horse released their take on our favorite barbarian, I've been constantly toying with the idea of buying them. (I fear I am fast becoming a Conan Completist!) Raven's Write-ups are fascinating, and she is making it harder for me to resist looking into the comics.

Yeah the series is going strong..I think they're up to issue #24 now...

The good news is you can purchase trade paperback or hardback collections of the issues from darkhorse directly (www.darkhorse.com).

Issue #25 is about to be released...

thank you could you give me a link please also are some collections better than other or a case of get them all 8)
Here you go:
Volume 1
Volume 2
Volume 3

I loved the first one and thought the second one was decent (a little too over-the-top for me). The third one hasn't been released yet.
Oh, these are the paperbacks BTW, there are also hardbacks available.

thank you it says on the third issue that it is direct print only how to I go about ordering such a edition or will other outlets get it too.

Hmmm, don't know about that one. That seems to be a thing for the hardcover edition only, though; I think the softback will be availabe normally (I've gotten mine from Amazon).

Dark Horse will likely publish the normal soft cover trade papeback this spring at the price most of us can afford. Until then we can only be patient.

Dark Horse also produce some 'one-shot' Conan stories as well of variable quality. Conan and the Jewels of Gwafar[sp], Conan and the Daughters of Midora and Conan and the Demons of Khitan. There are not canon to the monthly comic though. Of these Jewels is an outstanding piece of work, Midora a one-issue written in the style of the old Marvel monthly rather than Dark Horse's style and Demons was a dull repetitive 'monster mash' where Conan hacks up a bunch of demons based on Oriental Myth for no real particular reason than they are demons based on Oriental Myth.

Raven, not to beat a dead horse to death, but you realize once you've posted your version of Janissa, then surely you are planning a write-up of the Bone Woman...(not a hint not a hint) :D

Also, I have to echo Raven't sentiments regarding the 'one-shots.' "Jewels of Gwahlur" was really well done (and all three issues are now in TPB), but "Midora" and "Demons of Khitai" just didn't do it for me.

If you want the Hardcover you need to order through a local comic shop or on-line . Usually get mine from Forbidden Planet.

The paperback is out a month later http://tinyurl.com/bkmwa

I think this is always going to be a problem . Like Thomas before him , Busiek , and hopefully Truman , seems to have a handle on the character . When others have a stab, the quality goes down . Craig , of course had the benefit of having a Howard story to play with and that made the difference.

Of course- but since she's the mysterious sort that plays her cards close to the chest, I reserve the right to greatly revise her profile if she proves to be far different than she appears to be.

As for Demons since the last issue of the series came out about a month ago it likely won't be in trade paperback quite yet. Likely be done soon though. IMHO, there's a quick turnaround for the one-shots being bundled up into trade paperback. Plus I like the foxwomen of Oriental myth- in the mythology they can be friend, neutral or foe depending on how much they like the people they are interacting with. Making one a mere lycanthrope with imperial designs and hypnotic suggestion was a step down for them in the literary world.

Also, when Volume One is done I intend to do a last edit, bundle it up as a Word File and send it out to those interested. Those on my Blackwell Press mailing list have gotten the rough copies of the Sourcebook but I thought it could use a tweak or two. I intend to send one to the Dark Horse team via fan mail and see how they like it. I just hope their responce doesn't involve lawyers.....8)

Hey Raven, I loved the work you've been doing on this so I had copied the characters and notes on orders, etc and already pasted them into a Word doc offa this thread. If you want I can email it to you to look at.
