Star Trek RPG

I think there was an article in Signs and Portents about Mongoose having an interest on doing something with star trek, sort of a top ten wish list of what they would like to do, and what the problems with that are.

If they were to do it, originally, space quest would have been the system, based on runequest, which is now abandoned (but hopefully may appear in signs and portents form, this is just speculation). All new sci-fi systems would now be done using the Traveller rulesset.

I hope this helps in some way.

I had all of the core rules apart from Voyager

SQ, you seem to have had the Star Trek game before the last Star Trek game.

The most recent Trek game was produced by Decipher Inc. and it's rules set was called the CODA rules, which are dirrived in a way from the classical d20 rules. There are Professions / Elite Professions (or with LotR: Orders and Elite Orders) that resemble Classes and Prestige Classes, there are skills and talents (Skills and feats) but the throws where resolved using 2d6 and no d20 :-) It was a good game.

The version you seem to have was done by Last Unicorn Games and featured three stand alone quite independent rulebooks, all using the ICON system.

There was a TNG book (being the first)
A DS9 book and a TOS book.

Each of this corebooks fatured all the rules needed to play, mostly being the same, but differing in some minor details like having more soffisticated Trill rules in DS9 and character creation rules for non Starfleet characters, while TOS had older tech stuff and TNG was a mix of both.

A Voyager core book was to be published, but never came to be :(

As you can see, I have had em all, also :)

There were some decent modules published, including a Starfleet Academy boxed set and a Romulan Star Empire boxed set!

Actually some of the authors and writers of LUG carried on the torch and where hired by Decipher to author their CODA books, hence some similarities.

Where I like the rule side of things more with CODA, I think that (aside from the superb Starships book) LUG's Trek had the better supplements.

There was a plethora of awesome fan made stuff for LUGtrek too though most of it seems to have vanished off the web these days. The MadIrishman used to have some nice character sheets etc.. too for it.

A lot of this stuff is still available at Memory Icon

The FASA version of Star Trek was a percentile system like RuneQuest so it doesn't seem that off the wall.

As I said, I don't know about a RuneQuest Trek system, but I'd go and check it out.

Similarly, Decipher's CODA system was very much inspired by d20 so a d20 version of Star Trek wouldn't be so odd either.

But Decipher's CODA rules were much more streamlined (and I don't mean Saga Edition streamlined) and actually did work rather well. I'm still no big fan of anything feat like, but I think that a classical D20 system game engine wouldn't fit Star Trek all to well.

But my main point is that all the loyal Star Trek fans out there deserve a vivid and living Star Trek RPG, that is close to the on-screen canon material, that is well done and well supported. This is something I could see Mongoose do, but if the license still rests with Decipher for now, that's obviously off the table...

Anyway, I most likely would check out any new Star Trek game, being a huge fan of the setting, but the first books would have to be decent, in order to convince me to sink more cash into a new system.

there is a D20 form of star trek original series out. under the starfleet battle timeline license.. http://www.starfleetgames.com/

Prime Directive is an RPG based on a wargame, based on a book, based on the show. It bears only a passing resemblance to 'real' Star Trek.

Prime Directive is an RPG based on the Starfleet Battles boardgame, which is based on certain elements of the Strar Trek universe (original and animated). It is different from Trek in that it is more militaristic in outlook, with conflict between the different empires being almost constant: the universe being divided (vaguely) into various camps (Federation/Kzinti/Gorn/Hydran, Klingon/Romulan/Lyran, ISC/WYN/LDR/Orions and the extra-galactic Andromedans). The rules are available in three flavours: GURPS, d20 and d6.

If you want a better explanation, try the article on Wikpedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Starfleet_Battles) or go to the ADB's website (http://www.starfleetgames.com/).

Personally, I prefer Prime Directive to the later Trek RPGs, although I still like to drag out the old FASA version.

There is a new Trek movie in the works which will reboot the series, there already are four series finished and finally the license is available.

It would be indeed a great opportunity.

BUT:

I seem to recall having read somewhere that the Mongoose Crew aren't that much into Star Trek. Then there is already a new game (Traveller) being developed. This chance, as great as it would seem to be, will pass, I'm afraid...

We won't see a Star Trek line like the Mongoose Babylon 5 series :(

It would be cool but if it did happen it would not be for a while. That said though, if anyone gave the license the same line and releases as mongoose as a template they wouldmake a fortune.

It's far more likely just shutting down a fading line.

Well they discontinued their LOTR lines (both the RPG and TCG) as well just as they have their Trek lines.

Wouldn't be surprised if they bellied up within the month.

Sad to say but I agree.

So do I. Their lines were overpriced.

I only got a few LOTR things... mostly for reading.

I've run D-Trek... not bad, not great.

If Star Trek truly reboots (rather than rises as a zombie, if you understand the difference), a new STRPG would be a good thing.

If instead it rises like an ancient PC running Win95 on a box built for 3.1 in the Era of XP/Vista, well, a new RPG would be a waste of time and money.

A new series would be a nice booster shot. How about some closure after the dominion war, and the movies, and voyager getting back?

And I would like to see Xindi from enterprise in the federation at this point in the timeline. They rocked. But more epic plotwise like b5.
