SpaceQuest - What is Coming. . .

Hi guys,

Just a few notes on what we are up to at the moment.

The very earliest stages of development have begun on SpaceQuest, the science fiction (and likely 'modern') rules for RuneQuest. Serious work will start a little later this year.

Rather than a direct port with a few extra options from the current RQ rules, we are going to be forging ahead with a development/evolution of the existing rules set. These will be Open Content as before, so you can slide them into your fantasy games if you wish, and you can think of them as our take on a 'second edition' of the fantasy rules, if we ever do such a thing. Basically, we are moving the bar along, rather than simply replicating for a new environment.

The changes are mostly based on the way mechanics work and how things are calculated, so porting from one set of rules to the other should be relatively painless - aside from two extra attributes, stat blocks will be compatible backwards and forwards between RuneQuest and SpaceQuest. When development is a bit further along, we'll preview some of these changes in Signs & Portents.

SpaceQuest will appear as a 'generic' rulebook, as RuneQuest does, and there will be some 'core' supplements, covering equiupment, spacecraft modification, and so on.

There will also be 'setting' books (some of which may also be complete rule books, depending on the setting). As to the first of these, well we have not yet decided :) The current front runners, however, are (in no particular order) Judge Dredd, Starship Troopers, STrontium Dog, and on the far left side, Nemesis the Warlock. However, don't discount a dark horse appearing at the last minute. . .

Now if we want to read meaning the words 'dark horse' where there may indeed be none...

... the first thing that came into my mind was Dark Horse comics and all the their (potentially very juicy) lines.

He's a tease that Matt, isn't he?

Now I'm wondering what the two extra attributes will be...

I'm geussing EDU for one. Maybe a PSI rating? Or perhaps a Social Status.

I _knew_ someone would go down this line!

Attributes, not Characteristics. . .

Oops. My bad. Since I've already figured out that the new setting is Aliens Vs. Vampire Slayers of the Old Republic I'm ammending my guess to be Force Points and Blood Points.

You're prolly not far off with Force Points. There'll need to be some way of powering psionics...unless they use MPs? ;)

As for the other...what could you need in an SF/Modern setting that you don't in Fantasy? Hmm. Some kind of SANity, or HUManity?

Or, it might just be something else entirely, needed to reflect a developed/evolved game mechanic.

Or, I might just be hypothesizing like a mad loony fool taking a break from writing...

This is a book I'll grab as soon as it touches the shelves

And there's a company out there, (comstar games ? Something like that) developing a Traveller Runequest book as well

Whats going to happen with all this ?

Its going to f**king rock, thats what.

While watching The Science Channel, I am reminded of an idea I'd like to see in the official book to handle mass, weight, and differing gravity fields.

Runequest creatures already have a Size characteristic to indicate how large they are. I've felt that they also need a Mass characteristic, which for "normal" creatures like humans, is simply equal to their size. Creatures made of lighter or heavier material would simply multiply Size by a density factor, which is easy to calculate. (Just the grams per cubic centimeter density of the substance the creature or thing is made of.)

Weight would be equal to Mass in a standard gravitational field like Earths. For other planets/fields, simply add or subtract a number. Assuming that Size doubles for every change of 8, then Mars would have a gravitational factor of about -8. If you are a Size 16 human, then you are Mass 16, and on Mars you are Weight 8.

I guess there'd have to be minimum limits on Mass and Weight.

Hellboy would make a cool RPG, and with a moive coming out in 2008, I would not be surprised. That and I would buy it, and hellboy fans would buy it, and then there would be more RPGers out there. I think focussing too mutch on 200AD titles, while good, would not be pracitcal in the American market as hellboy would be.

Isn't there already Hellboy sourcebook for GURPS? I don't know if SJG still have rights that could complicate things...

It's not just a sourcebook - it's actually got a 'complete' ruleset within it (not quite a GURPs lite, but pretty much).
