Runequest What were you thinking

Okay, expanding on the list of possible reasons why the two were split

I think it is because of OGL license:

Core Rulebook ~ SDR rules

Just a guess, but it might make sense - core rules will basically match those in SDR?

They have already announced that there will be an supplemental SRD release of the companion rules when it comes out.

If they had just done one whopping rulebook, people would have whined and moaned about that too Lol.

Don't forget it wasn't untill RQ 3 that a lot of such information was included. At the time of RQ 3's release lots of people hated it and moaned about it (times never change), but even that was split into two core products. A Players Box and a 'Deluxe' Set.

216 pages is hardly one whopping rulebook.

RQ3 had all the character creation rules, combat rules, magic rules, and spells all in the players box. MRQ has additional character creation rules, additional combat rules, additional magic rules and spells in the companion. I just do not see the GM/Player split between the core rules and companion.

And they offered a deluxe box, combining GM and Players box, at a discount over buying them seperately.

We are arguing matters of opinion, so we can go on forever. It is a fact that some people feel like they are being milked (rightly or wrongly disclaimer here). I really havn't even been one of them, but I understand where they are coming from. The Modular argument holds more water with me than the players handbook/dm guide argument because I just don't see it split that way.

In referring to a "whopping rulebook" I was actually referring to them possibly including background information (like the fantasy earth material in RQ3) sorry I didn't make that clear.

1. Please don't feed the troll(s)

2. The point above about the game being available and supported is right on. for those of you with a group, and plenty of copies of old sourcebooks, good for you, but I'm glad it's available.

3. "cynical profit-taking" HA! I don't think this is the business to be in for that sort of thing "cynically hoping to break even" is probably more like it.

O.K. Point three has been covered in detail.

Point two is a big plus. I certainly do not agree with all of Mongooses decisions rules wise, but am sticking with it because it is in print, and really like the what I've seen of the Gloranthan material.

Point one, however, I have to take serious issue with. Why would anyone prefer to be around a hungry Troll rather than a well fed one. I mean really...

[Bait]Now to hold a poll on exactly who we should feed to the Troll...[/Bait]

Well, let me restate my view on MRQ. I believe that the game was adventised as one thing, using the RQ name, along with those of Stafford & Perrin to lure in the old RQ fans into buying a game which isn't RQ.

I feel like I was cheated.

Good I'm glad you feel badly, you come over as a pompous prig who thinks he knows better than everybody else.

As for the guy who started this thread (Grilnog) has anyone noticed his lack of responses.

I would imagine either he is from a small games company (who maybe failed to get the RQ license) - or maybe another member who lacks to courage to post under his normal name.

Yea maybe Razak was rude, but he was offended by the utter arrogance of the wally who started the thread. Most 7 year olds THESE days can't read to a standard where they could read an RPG fully enough to understand it to play it - year 2 reading levels are books like "Adventures Of Taxi Dog" and "A Chair for My Mother" not a set of Dungeons and Dragons rules.

The guy is full of it, and some of you stupidly got sucked in.

No wonder you don't like the new RuneQuest, you aren't smart enough to appreciate it.

Right. So what do you come over as then?

The best option is not to be around a troll at all, but if you were, I would prefer a weak famished troll rather than a vigorous well-fed one.

That logic provides to dealing with trolls of all types...

As far as I'm concerned, case closed. :D

I only associate with Elves generally, less likely to eat you . . . . . . .

Hey, I love this new Runequest. I had The original set, and RQ2 back in the day when they first came out so I was glad to hear that it was coming out again. Over the years I have lost the older editions and could probably not get my gamer buds to play a game that is 20 some years old anyways.

When I first saw the book I thought, hmmm, not such a thick book (although hardcover with stitched binding is great!). But after realizing this is just the Core rules I bought it immediately. It is a good buy, all you who are sitting on the fence after hearing all this bad talk about it. You can play the game with what is in there but more will be forthcoming from Mongoose. I cant wait. This game rocks!

Everyone, please, can't we just all get along? :)

If anyone is here who does not wish to discuss this product with other players in order to collectively enhance everyone's gaming experience, there really is no reason for you to be here, and I suggest you not bother making even a single post. This forum is for players of the RuneQuest game to talk to and help one another. It is not the Mongoose hotline (they have email addresses for that). If you're talking to Mongoose, do it there, if you're talking to players, do it here - pretty simple thing to remember.

Most of the people that have posted something negative about the game also make great contributions to the player community (people like atgxtg, for example, who while being very vocal about their opinion also help people out and suggest ways to improve things).

Anyone that is here just to say "it sucks" is really not doing anything constructive for the community. I also have to call into question anyone who does this for their very first post (and would love to be proved wrong here but if they're not going to buy the book I doubt they can do anything constuctive with the rest of us)

Anyone that is here to say "it sucks because.... and I propose we do this about it" is more than welcome :)

So lets just remember this board is here primarily as a place for us, the players, to gather together and help one another (which includes pointing out which bits are "broken" and how to fix them - in fact thats one of the most important things we do here!)

But lets not waste everyones valuable time in personal arguments with one another... (argue about what needs changing all you like, obviously)

Doc Warlock, too far - grow up mate.

Just got back from running a game, the new RQ is fluid and fun - even better than I first thought.

The Group (though not new to RPG's) are new to RQ and Glorantha.

Gringles Pawnshop got trashed!

Superb!

Really Lieutenant, can't you keep your men in order?

You'd think Gringle would just close up shop by now. How many times have those Baboons trashed his place anyhow. I figured he would get some reprieve with the new second age setting, but alas I guess not...

He's nothing to do with me.

He seemed to have wandered over from the SST forum, so I figured he fell under your chain of command.

Apple Lane is perfect for people who 'don't know the lay of the land' so to speak - don't you think?[/b][/color]

That is probably the single scenario I have run the most. It seems hard to conceive there are people who havn't played it. But I suppose there is a whole new generation of gamers ready to have some limbs chopped off..

I've had run ins with him before, he tends to 'join in' just for the crack I think.

My current group have never played RQ, we used to have two members who didn't like it - so it never came up.

They loved it, had a great time. I have a couple of 'tweaks' I use for Apple Lane which makes it a little more demanding on the players.

No real casualties (other than the Pawn Shop Lol).
