Prime Directive Traveller

I'd love to get my hands on the full deckplans for a Saladin (DD, isn't it? or is it the SC?) even as a collector... so might be worth offering as a standalone product alongside a re-release of the old Constitution Class plans...

Like this: http://www.cygnus-x1.net/links/lcars/uss-saladin-destroyer-scout.php ?

I received my Mongoose Traveller rules book on Friday. MT is very similar to classic Traveller with a few minor modifications.

Risking getting blasted here, was wondering if Social Standing shouldn't be replaced with perhaps Prestige or maybe even a Luck characteristic. Social Standing doesn't really seem to fit with the theme IMHO.

What do you all think?

Actually Social Standing is still very valid in the Star Fleet Universe. You have to remember though a certain Trial Video show had some bazzar ideals for one Political Entente. Large chunk of the Alpha Octave still had some form of a feudal system a work.

Romulan Great Houses to Lyran Counts or Dukes to Wealthy Federation Merchants to Klingon Subject Races.

True, Most of the other Empires surely have some type of Oligarchy, Monarchy or Imperial system. I guess it just seems out of place with the Federation, but I also see the point even with the member planets within the Federation.

Hmmmm, just seems like the whole Federation theme was separation from Social Standing, where as fame, prestige or luck is still a universal.

I think there is still a case for social standing to remain as is (more or less) - even in the Federation, which is more of a meritocracy than other empires; where you are from, who your parents are and what career you choose all contribute to your status in the eyes of other Federation members (and even those from other empires if it's high enough?). Perhaps there is a case for some careers adding to or detracting from Social Standing - it could be more fluid than in Traveller?

Just to let you know what is happening...

Mike sent me some information on the different species we'll be covering in the core book. I'll check them out this weekend. :)

Do you have any suggestions about alien species and their stats as they appear in other Traveller books so that I can see if ours look outrageous according to what has gone on before? (Yes I could track some down on my own, but you are the experts!)

Pictures, please make sure there are pictures. No matter how good the text it is always better when accompanied by a picture (especially one that reflects the text accurately).

DW

PS. Good luck on this project, it is already on my wants list and I'll be there if Mongoose does an pen launch day :D

Wow, am I in some kind oh holodeck fantasy, or are we really finally getting SFU / PD Traveller ?!?

This is indeed a dream come true, and as a number of you pointed out, this is coming home full circle for us 40-something gamers, who did play both Traveller and SFB back in the day (the 1980s). Back then, my group would indulge in an RPG campaign whose setting was essentially a cross-over between the SFU and the OTU ! What fun we had with duelling Kzinti vs Aslan, psionic battles between Zhodani and Vulcans !!!

After getting back in somewhat into gaming the past few years, I tried setting up a play-by-forum PD using Gurps (over at the SFU boards, "Cardinal of Klinzhai"), but never could find the time and needed motivation to see it through. With due respect to Gurps, D20 and D20m, Traveller is my first and enduring RPG system love, the SFU my most beloved setting. PD Traveller is like rediscovering and getting married to your high school sweetheart - after losing touch for three decades !

With that said, I'd like to ask Steve, Jean and the other fine folks at ADB, what would be a rough estimate for the release schedule for MGT versions of the other PD sourcebooks ?

I must also say that I am pleasantly surprised that ACTA will also get the SFU treatment. Which then also leads me to ask:

1. Is there, or will there be, ACTA treatment of MGT/ OTU -setting ships ?
2. Will there be some kind of interface between another eagerly awaited game - Starfleet Marines - and the PD line ? Same question for SFU Battlestations.

Steve, Jean and Mongoose, Maraming, Maraming Salamat Po !!!

domingojs23, we are probably looking at sometime early next year. Mike and I are both volunteers and, while this is high priority for us, we must deal with RL job responsibilities. :D

That said, Mike is hard at work doing species things so that we can have non-human characters. It's going to be a challenging task for us to balance them so that you don't have SFU Munchkins. For example, in Feds the Fralli took a long time to bring the concept to a level where they would be fun to play but they weren't a deus ex machina (The Fralli walks in, uses the metal deckplates, and shocks everyone into unconsciousness. He restrains the boarders and wakes everyone else up. Problem solved...). They are much tamer than they started out!

Webmom, is it alright to post a short description of some of the races in the Star Fleet Universe to see if someone knows something similar we can look at to see how the Star Fleet raceses will play out.

For Example we know that the Aslan and the Kziniti (Tigermen) are going to be really similar. Also the Vargr and the Carnvan (Wolflman like Race that is most likely extinct but pockets may turn up from time to time.) are going to be very similar. Is it alright to post a couple of line about a few of the other races like Gorns, Lyrians, Three Legged trash cans ummm.. I mean Hydrans, or even Tholians? Or is that something that should wait till you get around to it?

You'd probably be better off posting a link to the Starfleet Games website: About the Universe page.

That way, a simply click or two gives a much more detailed look at each of the SFU's empires.

There is no point system in standard character generation like GURPS or levelling like D&D 3E, so you can do pretty much as you like. Of note though, the section Aliens (pg. 41) in the Traveller Core Rule Book has several established "Alien Traits" to work with. Simply associate your Size, (Notable/Weak) Characteristic, existing alien traits and make up the others related to the SFU races.

Some "Alien Traits" may simply be homeworld skills like pg. 6 of the core book.

I have a request. I see that your PD20 version had most species including humans, as living to age 90. Vulcans live until 180 (pg 44-45 in PD20). Since aging/stat deterioration is part of the Traveller character generation process, can you have aging appropriate for each of the races or at least a second aging table for the Vulcans? Oh, and do the Romulans live just as long as Vulcans?

IIRC -and I just reread my GURPS Romulan over the weekend, yes they pretty much live as long as Vulcan.

The one thing about Traveller which might be a bit annoying for PD is that -technically- players are all retired Starfleet members (or retired from whatever profession they held). Unless this is bent a bit, it would make for a weird PD game...since it's all a bunch of old guys, not young (wo)men in thier prime as in the GURPS or D20 version.

You don't have to retire at the end of character generation; you can still stay in service... ala a military campaign in traveller.

Think of the end of chargen as the entry point for the character into thcampaignin.

As for age; a lot depends on how PD will play out; but, you can have older officers as well; or of course you could always limit the number of terms :)

Back when I ran my T2K campaign I generated charcacters by asking players to pick a Ending Rank or Age. Once they got to whichever they choose the character generation stoped and the ballon when up.

I can see myself using the same approach in any Prime Directive Campaign I maight run.

That is true. Most Travellers game we started after 4-6 terms in average...so middle ages foggies if not more.

well speaking as a middle aged foggie :D

Kirk 34 (youngest captain in history at that point in time)
Sulu 31
McCoy 45
Uhura 29
Scotty 45
Checkov 22
Chapel 31
Rand 26

at the start of the 5 year mission (well not Checkov)...so it kind of depends on what you want to do... but command you would need at least 4 tours... likely 5 to be a CO; war time would help ; same for a department head like Sulu who would require at least 3-4 tours...

Edit - Corrected spelling of Chapel :) Ta I'm not sure I do spelling before 0800
