Another option would be to reduce the length of a tour. Perhaps to 3 years to slow aging and speed progression. Just a thought. :idea:
Looking back at the old FASA ST:RPG, it was much more generous with skills, and required certain skills to hold certain positions. Using the Mongoose Traveller rules I came up with a Federation character gereration template. I made attendance at SFA 1 term, but required officer cadets to attend basic training first. So, the end result is ensigns have more skills than Able Bodied Crewmen, but are also 4 years older.
Cadets also must select a branch (shirt color) and receive skills that equate with their branch. If you chose support (red shirt) then you had to chhose a sub specialty (communications, security (he's dead Jim), or engineering).
I modified assignments to Military, Logistics or Exploration. Each has it's own ship assignment variables, and possibility of survival, or promotion.
