Ever had one of those games?
The brave EFTF liberated a settlement and then came under immediate attack from Chris' PLA. 2,000 point, capture a strategically important building in urban terrain.
The Europeans were confident - they had a plan. . . This time, it most certainly did not survive contact with the enemy.
I began to understand how the game would turn out early on. The advancing Leopard II 140mm (I have a big gun - what can possibly go wrong?) stormed up the main street to the objective, shelling a building full of PLA snipers as it went. It missed the house by a mile. The German crew laughed as the PLA's Type 99 MBT had its shot nullified by their APS (Automatic Protection System), then the whole European army watched in stunned disbelief as a tiny little LAW penetrated its front armour and turned our glorious tank into twisted metal.
I had better things planned for the Air phase, but suddenly twigged just how _much_ anti-aircraft fire the PLA possessed. The Typhoon II rocketed across the battlefield like a bat out of hell, desperately trying to outpace any return fire. It succeeded and released two 1,000 lb. JDAMs. The first bounced off the Type 99 (to all intents and purposes, anyway) and the second destroyed a building houses the PLA's elite spec ops squad - most died. This was the highlight of the entire battle. . .
The French Foreign Legion had occupied the objective building, and even survived a bombing run by the PLA's J-12, which destroyed half a British Army section. Vive la France!
Then the SAS entered, on board their Future Lynx. Now, in my defence, I was still following my plan. Get the SAS into the building, using the fire drawn by the Typhoon II to keep the Lynx safe. Unfortunately, Chris still had plenty of firepower left and the speed the Lynx was flying allowed every PLA yahoo with a gun to have a crack at it. To be fair, it survived much of the machine gun fire, but a well placed missile sent it crashing downwards - into the objective building.
The resulting explosion killed the SAS on board, destroyed the objective, and annihilated the Foreign Legion.
It was about this time that the British Army Lieutenant said 'sod it' and gave the order to retreat. The Typhoon II rocketed for the skies, chased by several AA missiles, while the remaining squads ran for home.
Not a great outing for the EFTF - barely 500 points left, and I had not wiped out _any_ PLA unit (bar the odd FAV).
We have resolved to do better and, in the next campaign turn, we have cunningly taken a mountain pass while the PLA and MEA duke it out over another settlement. Chris seems determined to win the hearts and minds of all civilians in the region - though I notice that Ian has grabbed a strategically useful air field, which Chris and I also want. . .
