Observations on 2e

I played a brief game with Digger last night using the 2e rules and thought i'd share some observations we made -

The new beam rules have the potential to be nasty. My Hyperion was essentially taken out in one shot by a beam wielding sho'kos. The little bugger did 9 hits from a single shot and effectively ripped the Hyperion apart. For those of you not familiar with the new beam rules, beams hit on a 4+ regardless of the targets hull score. Each AD that hits you can reroll, scoring another hit on each 4+ until you run out of AD. I have to question the wisdom of the flat 4+ target, especially as it seems to me that there are a lot of ships with beams now, turning in this case a glorified rowboat into a cruiser killer. To be fair, Digger would be the first to admit he had some lucky dice rolls there, but it still smarted.

I won't be using the Hyperion again. Having compared the amount of damage the raid level T'Loth can take to the Hyperion of the same PL,
I can't see myself picking one, at least the variant presented in the rulebook.

Other than that, the 2e rules seem to be a good revision and the game played smoothly. I think the jury will be out until I can see the full range of options in the fleet book, though.

YMMV of course.

To be fair, 1AD getting 9 hits is a 0.2% chance of occurring! That is 1 in 512 odds. So that is extremely lucky. But yeah, not as lucky as getting 9 hits from 1AD would have been under Armageddon!

T'Loth does have a lot of hits, it's not really fair to compare to this... it doesn't have anti-fighter or interceptors or as good weapons. The Hyperion has as much damage as a Firehawk, Drakh Light Cruiser, Omelos, Altarian, etc. It's on the low end for a Raid level ship, but the its weapons are on the high end.

We've been playing the new beam rules with 1e ships, 9 hits is pretty good even for a ship with 6AD like a primus. Overall all it is a good system as far as i can tell with 30+ games our group has had with the new beam mechanic. I've had sharlins miss completely, once done 15 hits.
I really like them new beam rules & don't worry the Narn always seem to roll better with beams. Hate them i do

Well luck obviously always has a hand in these things, of course. I'll need to play a few more games to see how it all shakes out.

You shouldn´t compare the damage values of the Narns to any other ships, they are supposed to be as tough as ships of other races are at one level higher.

Should your group find the beam rules too tough, you can add a houserule limiting the number of rerolls for each beam AD (maybe 3 or 4 times)

Limiting beams to 4 re-rolls would give you 94th percentile.
That is, rule out the 6% of freak occurances that get 5 or more hits.

What's wrong with the freaky chance of something happening against the odds? Isn't that why we roll dice anyway?
Sure but as a house rule this stops the truely freak occurances if the players feel that suits their style more than without such a limit. This is exactly what house rules are for :)

I agree. But with a 4+ base roll, the chances of that happening becomes a lot more likely.
As i say, this was only my first real game with the new rules and it may be that I was just really unlucky on the night.

Wow!! that's a uber amount of hits from the Sho'Kos!!! Looks like these ships may well be worth taking over there counterpart the Sho'Kov in certain situations now!! Good rolling!! 8)

No matter how things look, all the MGP rules are better than the AOG rules i used to play way back when.

And they're way better than a couple of other space combat games I could mention, but won't.

Yeah
Anyone else want some odds working out? One day I'll make a million like this...
OK Burger - odds of doing at least 4 points of Damage with 1AD of White Star Advanced Neutron Laser, firing on a Drakh Heavy Raider... :p
