Observations on 2e

Sounds like the Maximus truely has been optimized for it's role. It should serve nicely as an escort for a Primus.

Too bad that the new points breakdown means that we won't see it in War level games. Kind of makes ships that suck on their own but are good with other ships undervalued. I kind of wish we kept the old points break down system(although without the twofers).

Why wouldn't you see a Maximus in war level games?
If what they're saying about how PL breakdown works is true, it's only worth going down two levels. Maximus being skirmish means that unless it's a broken ship, it probably won't be worth the loss in ships you'd take breaking down three levels to it. You're only getting 75% of the value at that point.

I understand it's meant to prevent swarm fleets but to be honest I'd have prefered that they had gone the redundancy route to make bigger ships a bit less succeptible to a fatal crit. Oh well, guess it's a matter of opinion. I'll just have to wait until I get the rules and fleetbooks to find out.

But the breakdown at three levels down is the same as the old one.

Also if you split a war point into 1 battle, 1 raid & 2 skirmish, you get full value. You thus have two Maximuses to keep near your Octurian and give it 4 interceptor dice - nice!

Hmm its says Each priority level buys 2 ships of the level below and you can split down continually - so you could get 1 battle, 1 raid and 2 Skirmish for 1 war point

Liati, Balvarian, and either 1 Maximus and 1 Demos or maybe 2 Demos for me :) or then again maybe a Corvan - ah its diffiuclt now there are lots of good Skirmish ships.............. :D 8)

As I understand it the only reduction in the points split comes from Armageddon to Patrol which, if i recall correctly, used to be 24 but is now 18. Armageddon to Battle would actually get you an extra ship, used to be 3 but is now 4.

Thats if Im remembering everything correctly, its been awhile since I have looked at the 1st edition books.

Ah. I thought someone had said that we could no longer do the continous breakdown of breaking a ship down at each level. So one War would be 4 Raid or 6 Skirmish but you couldn't do 1 Battle, 1 Raid, 2 Skirmish. If we can still do that I'm happy.

Yes. I like the idea of a low priority ship that's worth taking at high priorities for a reason other than having missles or the scout trait. Well and other than being an initiative sink of course.

So now the question is, is the Maximus the only ship with the Guardian Array or do other ships have it as well?

And the Minbari have a ship that does something similar for stealth don't they? Do the other races have a ship specifically designed to do something funky like the Maximus or the Minbari stealth booster?

I answered that one a couple of pages back.

No but other Centauri ships can get the escort trait through refits, and so become capable of it.

Minbari don't have a ship that boosts stealth, what they do have is a ship that makes it easy to kill enemy scouts. There is the Oclavita-ki which gives +1 CQ to other ships in a pentacon. The Gaim queen ships give their CQ to other Gaim ships, but they are essential rather than optional.

Only when the last one dies, and only to the extent of CQ minuses and Initiative loss. If you have one protected/hidden off somewhere, you're fine.

You're forced to buy at least one; that's the mandatory bit. In a campaign, I could concieve of it being an issue. Very unlikely, though.

The Anti-Matter Torpedoes are now triple damage but have their range reduced to 25.

There is a new xorr variant, the xirr, that carries a triple damage bmbardment cannon.

The most welcome addition is prbably the Xonn dreadnought. A battle level ship with Hull 6.
