I already have two minis fleets, but some official 2E counters would be nice, and I wouldn't stop buying minis.

LOL, I have eight fleets, the original counter sets and would still buy a new counter set. ;)

In CBT, we call it "Metal-Crack"
I just found some that's cut a little differently from my fellow metal-crack addicts...

I love counters, I own the first 2 counter sets (1e and SFOS) and would still buy 2e counters. As soon as you make em, i'll buy em. By the way guys, matt gave very cryptic responses earlier on something special planned for counters but that they would be done later when there was more time. Looking forward to finding out. Can't wait.

Here is my list of wants for any new counters:

All ships redone on quality thick board as found in other boxed wargames.

The ship pictures should be high quality, possibly top-down shots of the catalog models.

Circular counters with weapon arc lines or pips. Also turning pips. The circular shape is nice for turns, especially with turning pips as you can just spin the piece to the correct facing(don't forget you need a front pip too, voice of experience making my own bases ) Also, the same peg circle in the middle.

Standardized base sizes for priority levels, e.g. 25mm for Priority, 30mm for skirmish, 50mm for raid/battle, and 60mm for War/Armageddon

Fighters would be hexes of the same size as the fighter-flight model bases.

Enough counters for big battles, e.g. 20 of each Patrol, 16 of each skirmish, etc. Yes this is a lot of counters, but I wuold suggest that these be offered by fleet, e.g. you would buy a Centauri counter set.

Fleet-specific freighters, transports, space stations, and breaching pods

Yes, I'd very much like to see that. It would be nice if there was some kind of color code for the sides (or just use their symbol). A couple of days ago I made up some 2" keys that I can slip over my base stems. It's very much like what you did probably. It just makes sense. :D I merged some top-down graphics I found and edited with my keys and in a crude way made (somewhat) what you are asking for. There could be more data such as adding the PL to the counter and such. Then, like you said make the diameters various sizes. These are not accurate but give a general sense. The ships would be seen much better as the rectangular blocks (which I did not take the time to remove) would not be there. If these were made in color they could be very usable. MGP should look at what you suggest.

Today I made up a "ship box" that might look better for those that already had some miniatures, but overall the flat counters would be more useable. You can see my weapon arc and turning key on the Nova's base, peeking from behind.

With the miniature lines being discontinued I think this is something that Mongoose ought to be thinking really quite hard about. If they are planning to keep on supporting the game, they need to provide game pieces to play the game with, and as has been said in the ACTA RIP thread, if there is no chance of getting new game pieces, games tend to die for lack of players.

I fully understand why MGP have decided to stop miniature production, although like many I wish they hadn't. However, I know from having things printed myself that the costs lie mostly in producing the initial item, and once printing is set up the actual expense of producing the sheets is very low compared to manufacturing a three-dimensional model. The master copies can be stored electronically for no extra cost or space, and even if the sheets are printed on good-quality card, they'd be far easier to transport and store than metal miniatures.

I think that the least MGP can do for ACTA, even if it's the last thing they do for it, is get some up-to-date counters printed on decent card so that those of us who won't be able to get hold of any more miniatures can at least keep on playing with a variety of ships and fleets. It's a great game and I would rather be playing with counters than not at all.
