Long Live ACTA!

interesting thread with some well reasoned comments. Not the usual type of thing on here for some time.

It is my personal opinion that MGP have dropped the ball for some reason. Now wether that is sheer greed or incompetence or modeling themselves on GW who knows. Retailers are ditching SST and ACTA, if not on it's last legs, is in intensive care on life support. If V2 doesn't live up to expectations and fix the problems then I don't imagine it will be around for much longer other than for die-hard fans who remember the glory days long long ago before revised editions and supplements and SFOS and armageddon etc etc etc.

Someone said MGP is a publishing company, not a figure company and that they have only had 2 years. So? I am sorry but they significantly fail to meet any objectives of any publishing company I have ever heard of. Leave aside the minis for a minute. How late was SFOS? How many times was the release postponed? Were there any typos or errors in it? Was it a quality finished product? Armageddon? Nice hardbacked cover, shame about the rest of it. Again how long was the delay?

They are books, and MGP's a publisher, there shouldn't be a problem wirth it and there can't be any excuse for the slip-shod error ridden products they have released.

The models them selves, well, standard b5 models are what they are, a sharlin is never going to look like anything else so the only question there is the quality of the cast you receive. The poor castings have been blamed on old moulds for the last two years, with promises of changes just around the corner all that time. With quality of the main B5 ships sinking the way it is and a fundamental lack of ivestment in new moulds how long can the supply last before everything ends up looking like a drakh monstrosity?

The new ships? Oh please. Ok it's down to taste, and Greg likes them, I like the picture of the Adira, but the model itself is a swine to put together, the rest of the models, apart from the crusade era EA suck. I would love to see the sales figures to see just how well these over priced ill designed out sized poorly detailed mishappen mistakes have sold.

I have 7 fleets, and the smallest is 15 points at War level priority. But I will not buy another mongoose model. I bought the drakh, dear god why didn't I learn from that? But no I didn't so I went out and bought the new ISA ships. Not a single one of any of the new MGP designed and made models I have bought has a hole for a flight stand, why not? They designed the models and know full well the purpose they will be put to, they even provide the stand, albeit, the size is often happhazard. Oh they can't design new ships, the majority of people, Greg aside, would appear to agree that their attempts have been awful, but how much skill does it take to put a hole in the bottom where the flight stand goes?

How much is sheer greed? £30 a ship? No thanks, not more than once and never again. We pay more in the UK because of transport costs, so why do we pay more in the UK than in the US for the books which are published here? The exchange rate does not add up to the price policy. Nobody mention those new Narn ships, you know the ones, the slightly modified T'loth wings at £8.50 ago. You should hang your heads in shame whoever though of that. It smacks of nothing less than GWism from top to bottom.

Stop pandering to the whims of players who shout the loudest about broken ships and rules fixes. Design the game you want to see, playtest it to death with a larger field of playtesters who will look to see where it is broken, listen to the play testers reviews and develop the game on a slow and stable footing instead of one knee jerk reaction after another. I loved this game when I found it, just after the 1st edition came out. It was supperb, uncluttered and a treat to play. Now I have endless books and supplements to carry around, models that suck a dead dog's balls and typos that make my brain bleed. Rulesmaster answers should not. repeat not, contradict what is written in plain English in the rule book. You have Signs and Portents, use it! Up date the rules via that instead of with thread after thread and answers that get lost amoungst all the whines and moans. Proof read your stuff before you hand it out.

Come on, give us a release date for Version 2 next year, and lets see you make it on time. Actually lets make it easy, give us a release date for anything and lets see you make it. Go on I double dare you.

I don't know how anybody else would feel about MGP casting the ACTA models in plastic. It might make for easier assembly and also would make the mounting on the little palstic mounting stand easier. Maybe no more broken tips because of the weight of the model. I have resorted to redrilling the hole for a 6penny nail and monting a 2" fender washer on the bottom of the the mounting stand. Need to drill the hole for mounting anyway. There needs to be something done to improve the models.

ACTA is thriving in my area. It's taken over the College Campus Gamer Club. I got players BUYING the Books! I got them bending rules and suggesting House Rules! There's alliances! There's Political backstage backstabbings! There's huge intergalactic battles! Five days out of the week I have people playing it! It's freakin' Awesome!

Look at that!

Lets not forget that alot of the moaning about ACTA is NOT because we hate the game but because we love it and can see the potential it has to be just that little bit better if only the Warlock was War level, or the Tertius was a little less potent, or the Vorchan didnt suck so much etc etc etc.

Personally I've houseruled the Warlock back to Tourney ages ago but the problem with doing that is that I want to play in the campaigns as well as run them, the thing I love most about the campaign rules is that they are a proper RULE set that doesnt require an impartial umpire. If I start houseruling things around ESPECIALLY ships in my own fleet then sooner or later Im bound to make a biased decision (no matter how unintentionally). And gamers being gamers, what if in the next two games through good tactics and a bit of luck that War level Warlock goes on to tear the enemey fleets a new one? Most gamers I know would imediately start whining that its overpowered and since its not official it shouldnt be used etc. Houserules are a good fix only as long as all your players agree on them, it only takes one person being a poor loser (or worse imho, a bad winner) and suddenly noones having fun any more.

Also just because a company no longer supports a game certainly doesnt mean people arent going to play it any more. We (my local club and myself) still play B5Wars, Battletech, Fullthrust and many other 'dead' games and enjoy them immensely :)

Battletech aint dead

when was the last time they made any NEW content for it then? Just because you can still buy stuff for it doesnt mean its a living system. But if Im wrong and it is still alive let me just say SWEET (ps. the travesty that is Mechwarrior heroclix does NOT count)

They've just released a new book for classic battletech, and the mini range is being overhauled

yep new updated rules with everything from the last 20 years or however long its been all in one book, including aerospace :)

Battle tech is far from dead. Go here:

They have been releasing new minis and new content for years.

That said, my $.02 on ACTA.

First, lets stop the "Whine" crap. I mean declaring all complaints "Whines" not the complaints themselves. That just gets everyone's blood up and causes more problems. People have legitimate complaints. If you don't like to hear them, stop reading every thread. Most are labelled so you can see them. Seriously, just walk away. My biggest suggestion for this forum would be to add an ignore command, so I could just filter posters who generate noise without content.

As for the game itself. I enjoy this game. It is a functional Fleet Action level game. It is not a simulation by any means, and should not be treated like one. It has a workable campaign system, and a nice "Rock, Paper, Scissors" philosophy of ship design. I have been working on converting rules for my Aerotech ships, just because I prefer this rules system.

As for the problems, my issue is with the haphazard modifications to the rules. This is not a detail oriented game, and it needs to be kept simple. The PL system is not robust enough to survive more and more tweeks.

Armageddon was a major letdown. Here are a few reasons I think so:

Obvious filler. Cut out the repeated ships and pages (something like 24 pages), the filler pictures (12 pages) and the one ship per page entries and the thing was about the size of the Drahk supplement.

Weird Inconsistancies: Why does the Early EA Hermes have 2 less AD than the 3rd Age era Hermes? They are the same PL. I know there may be a fluff reason, but that is also silly. By that train of thought, how can the EA produce ships capable of taking on Billion year old races in a few decades?

Splitting the EA: Did we really need this? Why not focus on giving every race some viable ships at every PL and let those who want to use ISDs do their thing?

Replacing the Tourney lists: Armageddon was supposed to eliminate the tourney list and give us one list. Yet it only changed a few ships (several EA, ISA and 1 Brakiri) It didn't do anything with all the Centauri, Minbari, Narn and other ships that were modified by the tourney list. Were these changes a mistake? Was the decision made that the tourney changes were unnecessary? If Mongoose felt it necessary to change all those ships for balance in the tournament, then why not retain some of those changes? I was expecting a lot more from this supplement.

Bottom line up front, is that I like this game, but I don't like where it is going.
