Right Hand of God
Mongoose
interesting thread with some well reasoned comments. Not the usual type of thing on here for some time.
It is my personal opinion that MGP have dropped the ball for some reason. Now wether that is sheer greed or incompetence or modeling themselves on GW who knows. Retailers are ditching SST and ACTA, if not on it's last legs, is in intensive care on life support. If V2 doesn't live up to expectations and fix the problems then I don't imagine it will be around for much longer other than for die-hard fans who remember the glory days long long ago before revised editions and supplements and SFOS and armageddon etc etc etc.
Someone said MGP is a publishing company, not a figure company and that they have only had 2 years. So? I am sorry but they significantly fail to meet any objectives of any publishing company I have ever heard of. Leave aside the minis for a minute. How late was SFOS? How many times was the release postponed? Were there any typos or errors in it? Was it a quality finished product? Armageddon? Nice hardbacked cover, shame about the rest of it. Again how long was the delay?
They are books, and MGP's a publisher, there shouldn't be a problem wirth it and there can't be any excuse for the slip-shod error ridden products they have released.
The models them selves, well, standard b5 models are what they are, a sharlin is never going to look like anything else so the only question there is the quality of the cast you receive. The poor castings have been blamed on old moulds for the last two years, with promises of changes just around the corner all that time. With quality of the main B5 ships sinking the way it is and a fundamental lack of ivestment in new moulds how long can the supply last before everything ends up looking like a drakh monstrosity?
The new ships? Oh please. Ok it's down to taste, and Greg likes them, I like the picture of the Adira, but the model itself is a swine to put together, the rest of the models, apart from the crusade era EA suck. I would love to see the sales figures to see just how well these over priced ill designed out sized poorly detailed mishappen mistakes have sold.
I have 7 fleets, and the smallest is 15 points at War level priority. But I will not buy another mongoose model. I bought the drakh, dear god why didn't I learn from that? But no I didn't so I went out and bought the new ISA ships. Not a single one of any of the new MGP designed and made models I have bought has a hole for a flight stand, why not? They designed the models and know full well the purpose they will be put to, they even provide the stand, albeit, the size is often happhazard. Oh they can't design new ships, the majority of people, Greg aside, would appear to agree that their attempts have been awful, but how much skill does it take to put a hole in the bottom where the flight stand goes?
How much is sheer greed? £30 a ship? No thanks, not more than once and never again. We pay more in the UK because of transport costs, so why do we pay more in the UK than in the US for the books which are published here? The exchange rate does not add up to the price policy. Nobody mention those new Narn ships, you know the ones, the slightly modified T'loth wings at £8.50 ago. You should hang your heads in shame whoever though of that. It smacks of nothing less than GWism from top to bottom.
Stop pandering to the whims of players who shout the loudest about broken ships and rules fixes. Design the game you want to see, playtest it to death with a larger field of playtesters who will look to see where it is broken, listen to the play testers reviews and develop the game on a slow and stable footing instead of one knee jerk reaction after another. I loved this game when I found it, just after the 1st edition came out. It was supperb, uncluttered and a treat to play. Now I have endless books and supplements to carry around, models that suck a dead dog's balls and typos that make my brain bleed. Rulesmaster answers should not. repeat not, contradict what is written in plain English in the rule book. You have Signs and Portents, use it! Up date the rules via that instead of with thread after thread and answers that get lost amoungst all the whines and moans. Proof read your stuff before you hand it out.
Come on, give us a release date for Version 2 next year, and lets see you make it on time. Actually lets make it easy, give us a release date for anything and lets see you make it. Go on I double dare you.
