Legend for just $1!

I just bought Monster of Legend and I get the Wrong Operand Type error when trying to navigate to the last page in that (using the same Adobe Reader 8 that I use to open Legend with no problem).

So it looks like the issue is with the PDF - Legend is fine (latest download) but Monsters is not.

I had the operand issue on the last page on my watermarked pdf from drivethrurpg. I use Adobe Reader X. I've switched to SumatraPDF (thanks for the hint above) and I'm not getting the error any longer. I had re-downloaded Legend core when I received an update email advisory, to no avail. That pdf also had the operand issue. It only is missing the OGL and back cover when that operand error occurs.

Anyhow, as to the book, awesome! I love the rulesystem over the ages (since Runequest 2nd Edition way back in 1979), Stormbringer in '81, and it's newer derivations/iterations via Cthulu and others. I think Legend core represents a very clean version of the system. By that I mean it is easy to follow, and supplies good examples throughout the book, not just in one part of the book. Thanks for putting this out as OGL content, and for that matter at a steal of a price. I may write a supplement or two for it if the mood strikes. I really wish more publishers would follow suit on pdfs of their core rules. I think a lot more players would come into the fold.

Here's to your continued success with the Legend line.

If you ask my girlfriend, she'll tell you adobe needs to be scrapped and to go with an open source program.

And she's absolutely correct - the Acrobat Reader is sheer bloatware. Just look at the size of the executable and its memory footprint when running. It has also historically been a source of security holes. Indeed, there was yet another zero-day exploit revealed just the other day that uses malicious PDF files to gain remote control over your system. This is already out there in the wild and god knows how many machines have been compromised by it already. Adobe are releasing an interim patch for this vulnerability on Monday, but won't have a patch available for all versions of the reader until mid-January. This delay is inexcusable given that the exploit is known and is already being used to hack machines - and a fix has already been written.

Meanwhile, the various other PDF readers out there are a fraction of the size of the Adobe Reader, use a fraction of the system resources to run, and don't need full administrator rights to run - limiting the damage that they can do in the event of a security compromise. On my Linux box (currently running Fedora 16), I've been very impressed by the improvements that Okular has made over the past year - it's PDF rendering has improved by leaps and bounds in that time period.

I use Preview on my Mac's, it's essentially free (part of the OS) and it works - I don't have any operand problems with it. I think it must be the way DrivethruRpg adds the watermarks with your name and order number. I've only ever struck this problem with the PDF's I've purchased from them.

Ignoring the discussion of which pdf reader works best, the point is the pdf file has issues which the ofiicial reader for the file format can't handle properly.

That's like an app from the iPhone store not running properly on an iPhone, it's not right.

Someone, Matthew?, should point this out to DrivethruRPG. It would carry much more weight with them if it came from the publisher rather than a customer.

My version of the PDF for the Legend core book from DriveThr (which goes up to page 242) has no operand problems. Using Adobe Reader X 10.1

Should note that, here at Mongoose, we have been unable to replicate this on multiple machnes with different versions of Reader. Still looking into it...

I've had the operand issue on every Mongoose product I've purchased via Drive Thru. I can't explain why some get it and some don't, unless it's a specific issue with certain versions of Adobe. I use Acrobat PRO v9.x at work and also at home, I just tried opening the PDF via reader V10.1.1 and it still has this issue.

As a side note, when I run the file through unlockPDF (thanks for the tip Phil) I lose the back page, so to me it suggests there is something not right about it.

I use FoxIT PDF Reader, have done for a couple of years, and all Mongoose PDFs have opened without a problem.

I know that doesn't help those who use Acrobat Reader ...

Our regrets that folks are running into issues with the last page of this title.
Like Matthew, we've been unable to reproduce the error here at DriveThruRPG which makes it very difficult to track down.

If anyone who is having the problem would care to email me at

It would help us diagnose and then fix the problem if we can get some information about the version of Adobe you are using and look for other common factors between people experiencing the problem.

Yes, I don't think it's just Mongoose or DTRPG. The only common factor is Adobe Reader X.

I just noticed that Legend is Platinum on DriveThruRPG. Granted the $1 is a huge incentive and its low price point may mean that many people that do not intend to play it are picking it up out of curiosity, but still, that's huge. The Traveller Core Book still hasn't hit Platinum. The only other core books to have that many sales is World of Darkness, Exalted, ShadowRun, Arcana Evolved, and Eclipse Phase.

Congrats to you Mongoose.

I've assumed that the problem lies with Adobe Reader X rather than with the PDF.

I love the PDF, and I love the game.

Congratulations to Mongoose on going Platinum with Legend, and in such a short period of time.

As said, I'm using Adobe Reader X and didn't have any problems. There was a problem with the initial upload but once it was corrected by Mongoose I redownloaded it and all my problems went away.

So it's unlikely to be an issue solely with Adobe Reader X.
