Lack of affinity for players when creating a Farmer Traveller?

Hydroponics is more Science than farming I should think. And working a domed homestead still seems more Mechanic and Agriculture than Pilot. But YMMV and all that.
And they use a prospector buggy but meant for hualing food around that needs the pilot skill

Yeah my thought was if you're shipping produce from your farm to the highport, you need pilot. Of course lots of farmers will hire someone else to do that, but lots will want to do it themselves.

Its also under Adv Education, which means its not part of the normal set of skills for them. Just something they can have access to if they need it.

I would think that hauling the food to market would be space trucker type job. But there can certainly be situations where a farmer loads up the Mod-Cutter and flies his own produce. It just seems kind of 'outlier' to me, but again YTUMV

On the other hand, if you are like those farmers in the Love, Death + Robots series, operating battle mechs and heavy weapons are a necessary skillset :p

Um, the name of the career is 'Citizen', not 'civilian'.
But I'm curious... why does 'Civilian' patronizing to you?
2. Not me. I'm just relaying on feedback from the player I was interacting with as I was showing him how to create a character. Sorry I hadn't made that clearer earlier, although in part, I am agreeing with him, as I can see how his attitude works for his situation.
He is just a very cool laidback kind of guy and stumbles or reacts badly when confronted by hints of authority. Having known him for the best part of two years or so, I would guess that he'd prefer to align with the countryside than with any perceivable authority; perhaps this is because he sees his "bread and butter" coming from being self-sufficient, rather than yielding to any imposing "urban" authority that he cannot put a face to. That sort of thing, although the exact wording detail may differ.

1. Um, yes, the Career is 'Citizen.' Don't know how we both missed that earlier. Thanks for the correction. For purposes of this discussion just swap out 'civilian' and replace with 'citizen', and I think the persuasion of my argument still holds as intended.

I would suppose it's how high up the tech tree you want your farmer to be, when you start adding specialized technical knowledge.
Well yes, but you could say that of the Military careers too. Given that you want to generate "useful" PCs, a little bit of souping up the availability of high tech opportunities wouldn't go amiss.

Was the player content with the character they rolled up by going Drifter? If so I'd call it a conditional win, unless I'm missing something else about the story. Mechanically Drifter isn't bad for skill selection. The higher survival/advancement targets can be chancy, but more so when you're forced into it and not specced for any of the stat combos.

A custom career has already been well covered. That's an option not enough people make use of, but really they're easy enough to do. I'm very open to taking requests when I run, but I think it's not what every player is expecting.

Colonist could have been re-skinned, with maybe the missing skills of Flyer-Remote Ops-Broker put into an Advanced Education table. In this case it sounds like the player might have balked at that, getting hung up on the name. If so that's on him this time. But in general GMs should be open to players rewriting the flavor of careers and events as well.

Yeah, if My players don't find a character class that appeals to them, I'll usually find out what's not fitting and then make the changes, so it has the skills they want. (within limits, obviously. lol)

If you're an independent agriculturist, you do probably need to be able to repair your equipment.

Probably, also be able to hack the software.

Viability could depend on government policies, and subsidization, whatever forms those take.

Benefit, subsidized land grant.

Benefit, freehold.
