Klingon Starship Markings

As you may have seen from the markings I've put on the finished D6 on this post: http://forum.mongoosepublishing.com/viewtopic.php?f=103&t=52508&p=735526#p735526

I'm marking the Klingons out exactly like their film model couterparts. However, I've not been able to identify all the Klingon Characters on the hull of the original Filming model. Modern Klingon as seen in the dictionaries and such makes the last character out to be a number 4 but what are the other characters and what do they stand for? any ideas? I want to keep the naming convention set out by the origina series as much as possible.

Simply D and 7. Mandel script, although it's uncertain whether that's what Matt Jeffries intended since that "translation" was made long after the fact and doesn't match the more recent "Klingon language" script.

Now, whether that means it should be "D7 number 4" or "D74" or similar (or is completely meaningless) I don't know. I'd suggest it might have been supposed to be IKV/KDF or the like, but I've never seen anything conclusive (and it's been debated on modelling/games sites often enough).

It might be worth asking over on the Background Q&A section of the ADB BBS, in terms of clarifying what convention the Star Fleet Universe Klingons use for their ships.

(The SFU cannot use the Franchise's post-1979 edition, but may have its own take instead.)
