[*] What will the new edition mean for third-party publishers? Will there be an update to the SRD so that they can produce material compatible with the new edition, or will the rules changes in the new edition be off-limits to third-party publishers?

Rumours that we brought the leading 3rd party publishers in very early on to help steer this new project (whatever it may be) might not be entirely unfounded.

This is excellent news. Having their input will also hopefully make the core rules even better (were there a secret project to revamp the system actually underway 8) )

What I'd like to see would include A, B and to a certain extent D

D depends on my liking A and B

If I like A and B I have no need to house rule stuff great, as house rules would make D mostly unusable.

Pretty good chance that D would mean my needing to buy a new tablet. Not that I can afford a new tablet...

Think I'll have a gander at RPGsuite.com and see if there are any hints on the format/OS they're releasing in. If it's iOS/OS X great, if it's Windoze, not so great...

We are not going to announce anything until it is ready. However, all going well... be here next Friday :)

So. . . Any opinions on what the announcement will be?

a) A new 2nd edition rule set, integrating, clarifying, and streamlining published rules for characters generation and a single design system for all vehicles from bicycles to super dreadnaughts?

b) An all new Official Traveller Universe which breaks away from the 3rd Imperium history, featuring new alien races and updated star system generation rules that more closely match current science?

c) An ultra-high technology add-on to allow TLs of 30+?

d) A computerized game interface that will automate everything from character generation, random encounters, spaceship design, to interstellar trade allowing for both solo play and online group adventuring?

e) The creation of a new Traveller MMORPG?

f) All of the above?

Discuss.

At this point I have just walked away from my worry and my expectations. I figure what ever it will be is already done. Either I will like it or not, but I can't change it at this point.

Mongoose, I hope.

You can still do your part to change it. This playtest will be way better than how T5 was playtested. T5 was stillborn.

A) definitely.
B) maybe. Could be cool.
C) not interested. My players and I have enough trouble imagining how TL15 will change things, going even farther basically means magic.
D) yeah, but it can't be required. And it needs to be flexible enough to deal with house rules and 3rd party material.

I really want an overall rules clarification, with conflicts resolved and gaps filled. Consolidated rulebook(s) would also be great, so I don't have to flip thru several to find what I need.
I like what ADB did with SFB - rules were organized and numbered in such a way that they could be printed to be able to organize them in a binder. That is probably not feasible with traveller. People seem to like their nice books with shiny artwork. But I really want all my rules on a certain topic in one place, logically ordered or at least indexed. Maybe D) can help with that.

The new books, and any software needs to have accessibility in mind. One of the members of my RPG group is visually impaired, so high contrast, zoomabity and screen reader compatibility is a must. Mongoose traveller books tend to be good in this regard, but some RPG books aren't contrasty enough. (I can't say I know exactly what works best for him and what frustrates, so I would be glad to put anyone from Mongoose or 3rd party publishers in touch with him if they want try to make things more accessible to visually impaired fans and customers)

Once the announcement's been made, there will be plenty of fresh new discussions here.

I'm sure the Grognards are already frothing at the mouth...

Actually, they haven't been. They're elsewhere in the verse, in the T5 forums. "Fresh new" is very much what this version of MgT is about. While still being compatible with the vast majority of Mongoose books out there. Some of the chapters in the book were left unchanged pretty much. Just like a 2nd edition would be.

T5 was a great idea that totally sucked. It's certainly not a playable game in the sense of it's Traveller predecessors. It seems that Traveller, as a gaming system, reached it's peak in the GURPS universe. I'm ok with the MGT version, though the continual production quality issues that plague so much of the MGT line are kind of irksome. Still, it's more of a game than T5.

IF there's a re-launch, it better be a damn sight better than what's come before it to get my money and interest. I'd really like MGT to hook up more with 3rd party publishers who create many excellent products. I'd also like to see the rules cleaned up so at least the canon ships and equipment follow the stated canon rules (I know, such a fantasy!).

So which was it?

Traveller 5.09 is the current edition. It has a game in it now.

With who? Not with GURPS players.

Name one plagued issue.

Which Traveller meets your criteria?

You mean fire all the lawyers? Which excellent 3rd-party needs a hook-up?

So which is it? You want canon or 3rd-party or "any setting goes" when it comes to Mongoose Traveller? Which version of Traveller has done this before to your liking? Yoo sed fantasee. Nevermind.

Sorry, I must have missed something, where do you join the playtest?

It will be announced how to join. I don't know how it's done exactly. 1st edition had a playtest of its rules also before its release. I wasn't around back then. I was playtesting Traveller 5 at the time, which ended up being a complete waste of time.

Anyway, the playtest of 1st edition went well from what I've read about it. Some items were left out of the final release because playtesters thought some of the rules seemed a bit crunchy and slowed things a bit.

What's your source of information that suggests V2 is at beta and will be looking for play testers?

Without confirming, or denying, anything, wait till Matthew makes an official statement on Friday.

Indeed. But you might want to take a quick trip to Facebook this evening.

I stumbled across that. Looks like the thing I can show to players who don't have a sci-fi background.

Am keeping a beady eye on your website etc waiting for 2.0 :P

Go up one level, and check out the site's main board index. See if you can see what I am now seeing today on the board.

I don't think I am seeing anything different. What are you seeing?

Same here Alex, I can't see anything I haven't seen before.

What are you referring to?

:)
