Imperial Marines Numbered Units

A player has just created an Imperial Marine and in order to flesh out his background it would be nice to have a name for the unit (division, regiment, battalion etc) where he served. In The Spinward Marches Campaign, for example, the 154th Battle Rider Squadron and the 4518th Lift Infantry Regiment are mentioned. Something like that (with our without all the details).

Is there a source somewhere for something similar (or simpler) for Imperial Marine Units, preferably in the Spinward Marches?

I haven't been able to find any so I just model mine on current military units.

If your model is based on US Marines, your basic US Marine infantryman would be a member of 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 4th platoon. The platoon would fall under a company (4 platoons per company) designated by a letter of the alphabet, such as M Company. Then that company would fall under a battalion (4 companies per battalion) designated by a number, 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, or 5th Battalion. The battalion would fall under a regiment (5 battalions per regiment) designated by a number. In Traveller the regiment number could by quite large. The regiment would fall under a Marine division, which in Traveller could also have a pretty large number. So: 3rd Platoon, M Company (or Mike Company), 2nd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division.

A US Marine artillery battalion has batteries instead of companies, such as B Battery (or Bravo Battery). US Marine air units have squadrons instead of battalions, such as Marine Fighter Squadron 214 (VMF-214); groups instead of regiments, such as Marine Aircraft Group 3 (MAG 3); and wings instead of divisions, such as 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing (3d MAW).

If your model is based on British Royal Marines, a platoon is called a troop; a battalion is called a commando, such as 43 Commando (pronounced Four-three Commando); and the largest unit is a brigade, such as 3 Commando Brigade RM (RM = Royal Marines).

In both the US and British Royal Marines, there are other platoons, companies, and battalions such as Scout/Sniper Platoon; Force Recon Company; Recon Battalion; Recce Troop; etc.

You can google the breakdown of military units to get an idea of the size and make up of components.

This might be of use, while it is for TNE it contains details of the Marine units serving there

I don't know what how the current Imperium Marine units are organized and named, but an easy way would be to take the organizational type from GURPS, and number the regiments the corresponding number to the fleet they are permanently attached to.

The good part is that there are several sources describing the overall structure of a regiment etc, but besides the 4518th Lift Infantry Regiment (which is not an Imperial Marine regiment) it’s hard to find any named/numbered units.

It would be nice to have something similar to this page with the numbered fleets http://wiki.travellerrpg.com/Numbered_fleet

First, their correct name in the Third Imperium setting is the Imperial Star Marines.

Next - have you checked the counters in FFW and IE?

In FFW there are eight ISM regiments, designated as 1071, 1931, 2091, 8041, 5722, 3277, 8327, 6127.

In IE there are five ISM regiments, designated as 6701, 4217, 4545, 4940, 2666. There is also an ISM division counter but it lacks the regimental details.

Excellent, thank you! I only have the board games as pdf and the resolution is too poor so I can’t read the numbers. The FFW regiments will suit my campaign perfectly.
