High Guard irregularity...

BFalcon

Mongoose
Just speaking to Zero and it looks like there's an undocumented change in different versions of High Guard.

My (printed, full-size) copy has the Pilot services skills with entry 3 being Navigation. Zero's has it as Astrogation... could people check and see what their versions have and see if you also have the errata-mentioned 8,6,8 for the survival checks? That way we might be able to tell which version was printed later...

I don't think Mongoose put "printing version numbers" in their books, do they? That would be the easiest way to tell...

PDF version of full size, created 03/12/08, modified (download?) 26/02/11 (yeah, probably the download date, sounds about right)

Still has the old 7/5/6 survival rolls but has Astrogation for the skill.

Full sized Print. But mine is o oldd, have the table of contents from mercenary rather thanfor High Guard, a real pain. And yes it has Nav and 7,5,6.

Original full size printing with Mercenary table of contents: 7+, 5+, 6+, Navigation.

LBB2 Third Printing: 8+, 6+, 8+, Astrogation.

I believe Matt said Mongoose would make this right (i.e. replace it for you) indefinitely in an old thread about this - suggest you PM him.

OK, cool - so it's looking like the Navigation skill was replaced by Astrogation and not noted in the Errata... thanks guys. :)

I'll go pencil that in now.

Yeah, I've got one of the published first drafts as well. Thanks for pointing that one out.

In some ways it is quite charming that we expect to find errata, and can spend hours looking. :(

Also lots of opportunities to think through the rules ourselves, without trusting the RAW. :)

So Mongoose is changing 'Navigation' (among the stars) to 'Astrogation'? That's one change I thoroughly approve of. I've always thought it a no-brainer to distinguish between navigating wet navy ships across oceans and starships between stars.

As one of my NPCs puts it: "Astrogator! I'm an astrogator! I guide ships between stars, not rowboats across puddles!" ;)

Hans: Well, actually both make sense, given that the Pilot (Spec Ops) is supporting marines, so could have been using Navigation to navigate across a planet's surface in order to drop the marines he's carrying... that's why I didn't pick up on it...

The Traveller Core Rulebook has it as Astrogation. Navigation is the planet-side counterpart of astrogation...

I seriously doubt the intended definitions of 'Navigation' and 'Astrogation' have changed. I have what looks to be a first/first core rulebook, and the definitions are what we would expect.

What I imagine happened is that whomever is writing the book occasionally has a brain-fart and puts Navigation in when they mean to have Astrogation. Pretty easy to do, actually ...
