Who on earth would want to play a medic in Traveller? No guns, healing people all the time, keeping at the back every fight, making nothing but wise cracks like "Im a doctor not a magician". No fear. What happend to interesting careers like colonists, bounty hunters, assassins, smugglers/blockade runners, moisture farmers, alien vets/zoologists, salvage collectors, starship rescue technicians, tomb raiders, detectives, etc etc. Most of these have not seen any or much development in Traveller to date. If you want anything done you have to do it yourself....

Personally I'm waiting for combat cook. Nothing like scrambling eggs and picking off annoying aerial targets in the morning with a shoulder-launched SAM.

:)

But I can see some interest in this. You may not run it as a PC, but its still useful background info as an NPC. Besides, maybe you'll need to lure some girls into your gaming group and you can tell them they can play a nurse!

(ducking for cover...)

Well, in the real world combat medics have the highest percentage of
losses of all military branches, making combat medic the most dange-
rous job in the world ...

yeah but thats combat medic rather than just paramedic or something...

True, although I would not find it difficult to write a couple of adventures
for a more normal paramedic, too.

In my view the problem would be the same with any other specialist, an
engineer or a shuttle pilot or a scientist can be just as boring as a medic
if they are judged only by their opportunities to use their core professio-
nal skills.

DFW, nats and phavoc, you seem to have forgotten your "JK"s and <sarcasm> notes. At least I hope you're not so unimaginative and chauvinistic.

I'm playing a Doctor in a PBP right now and so far it's great. The coincidence of this supplement is interesting but I'm debating the value since I've already done the char-gen (HG) and really found little or nothing lacking. Even the Core rules seem complete enough. I need to poke around the preview of this supplement and see if there is more utility to it before I'd be interested.

...but then I don't really get the need for a lot (or all) of the char-gen supplements and expansions.

I know you were joking about the Combat Cook supplement (shades of Segal ;) ), but seriously, it could be done with Core and be great fun. Ditto any of the other many char-gen supplements I've seen. I see value in them in firing the imagination for those who maybe never considered developing their basic character through role-playing or out of character skill choices. Players, probably new to the game, who think (wrongly) that if it is not listed in a book then it can't be done.

...colonists, bounty hunters, assassins, smugglers/blockade runners, moisture farmers, alien vets/zoologists, salvage collectors, starship rescue technicians, tomb raiders, detectives, etc etc. are all easily doable with Core imo. They are mostly names for what one does with certain skill sets. Do you really need a book to tell you that? Or guide you in creating one by choosing the right skills if that is what you want?

Now that I've got the publishers of many such burning to tear me a new one for suggesting their work isn't needed, I'm not. As mentioned it is a boon for neophytes who might not realize they can do it. And those who don't have the prep time to lay the groundwork. And if you include additional utility in it for the rest then you expand your market and usefulness.

Anyway, for a Medic (or any character) to work in a game takes only two things; a willing imaginative player, and a willing imaginative referee. And without both of those it simply won't work no matter how brilliant the rules or supplements :)

My next PC is gonna be a Lion Tamer...

;) JK, but it could be done, with Core, so no I don't need or will wait with gleeful anticipation for "Career Book 117 - Lion Tamer"

Besides; CHAUVINISM: Prejudiced belief in the superiority of one's own gender, group, or kind.

I has a dictionary too :P Chauvinism is not just the (more properly termed) Gender Chauvinism you picked to define for your ill considered reply. And yes all three of you exhibit a lack of imagination and/or chauvinism in your replies above if you weren't engaged in humour.

LOL, caffeine levels fine here buddy, and no sharks this far inland. You just mind the ones you keep jumping don't take a bite out of you...

I thought I was clear about that? In a word, yes!

I've been having great fun with Spica's Career Books, especially the 'behind-the-scenes' careers like Cosmonaut, Space Patrol and Port Authority. While they could be created with Core and some minor tweaks, the expanded and specific events and bennies tables are really nice and save a lot of work. And the fact that these careers 'exist' adds color to a campaign where before there may not have been as much.

I say kudos to Gypsy Knights - the more the merrier!
