I was wondering what was the strategy employed by Gaim fleets and what are their strengths and weaknesses. Someone might be playing Gaim soon and wanted to know what made them powerful.
The only ones I have seen thus far - kept to the back edge of the table and launched a screen of fighter/ missiles and breeching pods whilst trying to keep at range. Effective depending on opponent and scenario.
It is really just the queenships with the photon bombs that have to sit back like that. Their other ships are much closer-ranged. I however am not an authority on Gaim tactics so i'll be silent now.
the queen ships and carrier will sit back and launch fighters whilst killing your fighters. meanwhile look out for assault ships, these are pretty much the only ships capable of doing serious damage and crits due to having beams all round. the assault ships will normally close fairly quickly then scramble breaching pods up close. these need to be shot as well or you will have hordes of Gaim drones running round your ships.
priority targeting in the Gaim fleet is point beams at assault ships, use secondaries on breaching pods then fighters. the ships with e-mines should be last targets as these cannot crit you so are not a huge priority.
Ships with plenty of photon bombs sit back and bomb the enemy. Make sure they have no viable fighter force in turn 1 or 2.
Gunships and assault ships (and scouts) should close and disrupt the enemies attack (pick off escorts, carriers that haven't launched everything, fleet carriers and other ships with plenty of AF dice first).
Use fighters to clear enemy fighters first then swarm enemy ships. Only use suicide fighters once most or all enemy fighters are gone and target things that will really suffer from the crits.
Boarding craft can be used en-mass vs. big stuff, or in small waves to clear smaller ships. I tend to use a dozen or so as an escort force for my queen ships to discourage attack.
Combined suicide fighter/ boarding pod attacks work VERY well.
Have fun and don't be afraid to use an unusual fleet. Only use a pure queenship fleet if you don't like your friends.
I have been looking at the Gaim fleet list, and, seriously, if I ever come across them, I will use as many FAPs as possible on BlueStars and JP Bomb them to death... I don't care if it is unsportsmanlike.
The Gaim fleet is rather odd. It has a lot of theoretical firepower but much of it is low punch and/or difficult to coordinate. The queenships usually need to keep the range open while the gunships and auxilliaries need to close range.
Remember always if you take a lot of queenships and loose them you may end up loosing the fight regardless of what is left on the table.
Gaim are highly dangerous against many fleets at low prorities as the large numbers of auxilliaries and long range of the queen ships is hard for low-priority ships to deal with. ISA and Drazi have particular problems because photon bombs ignore dodge. Minbari have problems because they ignore stealth (as to ramming fighters). Both will rely on speed to avoid most of the auxilliaries and minimize the amount of photon fire before they can get in range. ISA and Drazi also don't kill fighters well. Their only real defense is high speed.
Narn and Drakh on the other hand can be serious problems for the Gaim at every level. The Narn have some staggeringly tough ships at low priorities that are almost unkillable with non-crit photon bombs. A well-built Narn force can also destroy enough of your auxilliaries to make it safe for him to charge your queenships and carriers. Narn don't have a lot of anti-fighter but they do have a lot of secondaries in all directions. High priority battles will also leave you facing some of the toughest ships in the galaxy and a ton of e-mines. You'll dust his fighters in a round or so, he'll dust yours in a round or 2 after that. The difference is he doesn't need his to kill you.
Drakh are just a nightmare. There isn't a lot you can do about it. A good GEG renders him nearly immune to nearly everything you do. If you don't crit him you do basically no damage and photon bombs don't crit. They also don't do enough damage to overcome the GEG on their own. Your fighters also must crit to do damage and they aren't that fast. Your breaching pods are the only scary thing to him but many of his ships are faster than they are so he'll just shoot down the near ones and fly by the others. Facing Drakh or Narn you really need some of the non-queenships to help out.
Most of the other fleets will be a rather even battle. They have particular qualities to watch out for (Centauri speed, EA range etc.), but they are doable.
