GEG versus Breaching Pods

I guess here the GEG would have no effect as the pod doesnt do any damage until the troops are aboard and won their fights. then would have no effect against the crew loss afterwards.

i may be wrong though but does anyone else have views on how this works?

Good question.... I would have to agree with your premis of the GEG does not stop the pod contacting with the ship (or the shuttles from the Launch Breaching Pods and Assault Shuttles special action). Otherwise the Drakh would be immune to boarding actions untill Crippled and the GEG trait was destroyed.

Damage caused by boarding actions occurs within the hull (inside the protection of the GEG.

It also leads to the interesting question of whether Adaptive Armour would halve the sabotage and Crew loss caused during boarding actions.

Precisely correct. From the Drakh booklet:

"Gravitic Energy Grid X: This is a new trait. The total amount of Damage and Crew deducted from the ship by each separate weapon attacking it is reduced....."

Neither a Breaching Pod, nor a Troops, is a weapon.

Drakh Raiders are highly vulnerable to Breaching Pods.

I didn't know that shuttles could be used to board enemy ships? I thought they just to be used for planetary assaults?

That is correct, JayRaider. But any ship can perforn the 'Launch Breaching Pods and Shuttles!' SA, this is independant of the Shuttles trait.

and you get to use all your troops on board.
however its quite difficult to pull off really as the target cant have moved, you have to be within 4" and no ship can attack the target of the boarding action.

indeed, managed it once. A Primus all stopped in front of my G'Quan. I said, do you really want to do that, I have troops, sure he replied, I'll be fine... one dead primus later....

All stops are pretty common crits so not sure I agree that it is hard to pull off.

Don't have my books in front of me but I thought you could move to be within the four inches, if not then maybe a tad harder.

Hopefully one captured Primus later, ready to sell on the black market... :)

Yes...pak ships are kind of embarrassingly short of defenders....

And once you start killing the crew, the few marines they've got stop fighting and enjoy a light snack.

Boarding is actually why ikorta are one of my favorite ships. 10 troop compliment on a ship with SAP/P weapons, at skirmish level, is just begging for that SP 0 crit. I've actually managed to do it a couple of times, in one fight I actually managed to board two chronos in the same game, needless to say those were rather short boarding actions, and I've also managed to nab an omega. ;)
