Previous polls said that a majority wanted fighters given more firepower.
Maybe because of the posts that seems to have changed.

Then it seems that the majority wanted fighters with more survivability and then that seems to be changing.

Speaking for myself, I want them to have a useful tactical role. Looking pretty until the e-mines fly or they die heroically isn't good enough for me.

I'm with you 100%

I also agree with Balance. If they do not have a tactical role apart from killing other fighters, why use them anyway? And why bother to counter fighters with fighters if they can't really hurt you in most cases? I guess because they were included in the ship. Who would buy them if they weren't?

Buy a nova, get 4 starfuries for free! :P

That fighters don't carry firepower to be able to really hurt a ship, are massacred by AF weapons and e-mines, and that their 'mothers', the carriers, are in constant debate if these are a viable chioce for a fleet, and mostly argumented to be chosen for their command rate bonus all indicate that the role of fighters is to show the painting skills of their owner, and not even the equivalent of cannon-fodder.

This all has been mentioned by many in different threads in this forum. No need to repeat the discussion. Do we all agree that fighters should have a tactical role at all? And do we share visions for that role?

Same as the show? According to JMS, the two Hyperion cruisers at Severed dreams were killed by the starfuries and thunderbolts of the Churchill, Alexander and B5 station. Do present fighters give a player the same ability?

This is why I chose option 2. because something needs to be done.

Certainly fighters need to be treated as valuable fleet resources. And as to the point of buying them with fleet points, take a look at the Minbari Patrol PL. Currently you may as just buy the Tigara/Teshlan (with freebie Nial) and the Patrol PL choice [basically 5 point patrol breaks down to a combination of 5xnials or 10x Flyers, 2 Two Torotha's + 1 Patrol, or the 1 Raid + 1 Patrol] I can practically guarentee you will never see the solely fighter fleet option. It gets even worse when you 'need' to replace losses in a campaign.

Personally I have not had too much of a problem with fighters surviving under SFOS, there are usually more important things to fire upon. However under old ACTA, I found you needed to take the Darth Vader approach "We must destroy them ship to ship. Get the crews to thier fighters." A couple of independent wings were essential choices in any fleet that did not bring enough in hangers. Fighters were a little too powerful originally if left to roam with impunity.

"Fighters dodge or die."

Well with that problem resolved I will have to come up with something else.

Wulf, your idea of activating by wings or mothership definately could be a solution but I still don't think it is enough. While the number of fighters that get a chance to fire each round increases will they still end up dead to the secondary weapons fire. Basically it is an option I like but I don't think it is quite enough. What if you gave fleet carrier an unlimited range and allowed flights within 10" of their motherships to make a recovery roll?

Two options atleast seems to be agreed upon. AF gives a -2 to the dodge roll and models in base-to-base get a +1 to their stealth roll.

Note that as an addendum to my comments earlier, I think any tweaks should be very minor and very well tested. I wasn't around for it, but I accept that they were originally overpowered.
