Fighter basing

Cosmic Mongoose
now I know this has been mentioned before but short of trawling through the forum I'm asking again.
in last nights battle the EA had something like 24 fighter flights available. but I only had 8 bases, yes we can use tokens, but what alternative methods have people used for fighters. I remember timeslips stands, but I am thinking of budget methods to make my 8, into 16 or so.. with the 4 stands of thunderbolts i have unmade, I may actually be able to get the right number of fighters lol

My philosophy is to use the original hex bases, but only use three fighter models to a base, hence doubling the number of flights I would otherwise have access to.

I use GW slotless slottabases. Drill three holes, push three wires through. Fix them in with putty or whatever you like to use. Clip the fighter's pegs off the bottom and drill holes into the fighter. Glue the fighters to the wires.

Three-fighter flights on bases that are similar in size to the hex bases. A bit fragile though, so be careful how you transport them.

Cut a hexagon, circle, triangle or other shape of your choice out of cardboard. Cover it with putty. Before the putty is dry, push some fighters into it.

Sone folks use plywood discs, IIRC. Or a single fighter on the bottom ppart of a small flying base.

Personally I think counters are great for large numbers of fighters.

I build my own Hex Base...

The vantages:
-no unused holes
-all fighter have same style (example W Star Fighter)
-no overhanging parts /wings (Thunderbolt), good to handle
-varios set-up (example - Shial (2 Mini-Beam) =2 Fighter on top; Nial (3 Mini-Beam) =3 Fighter on Top.

I use 1" square Litko bases and put 3 fighters on them. you can get 100 cheap and they match up to the counters perfect, so no complaints. Plus easier to pick up and move.

I gave links to both Gale Force 9, and Litko, both of which sell a wide variety of base shapes in large volumes for a good price.

In that thread I mentioned that I'd post some images. Here are some unpainted Starfuries, Thunderbolts, Delta-Vs and Double-Vs (one Delta-V accidently mixed in with the Double-Vs) on gf9 bases. For some of the fighters, you can use the little post that's already there. For others, I clipped it off, filed the bottom smooth and drilled a hole for a brass tube.

I've got most of mine on SST/GW sized 1" round bases for the most part, but all my newer ones use 25mm square MDF bases from East Riding Miniatures. Same size as the SFOS counters.

Here is the thread with what I did with my fighters:
http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=41734

I used bases from Litko and they are excellent. VERY well priced, and they come in whatever size you want, as well as many shapes. Easily the best price for bases I've found.

I trimmed the stubs off my fighters and them drilled holes into them and the bases. I cut sections of pins from some jewelery/craft place of various lenghts then glued the fighters to the pins and then to the base. I did the holes in the base kinda random, so it looks like the fighters have all 'broken formation to engage the enemy'

The pins range in size from 1/4 inch to almost 2 inches. I feel this gives some depth to my fighter flights. They aren't all sitting on one plane.

Depending on the fighters, I based different numbers together. Aurora's are in groups of 5, Thunderbolts are in 4s (my black omegas will be in 4s as well), Nials will be based 3 per and my shadow fighters are 2 per stand. I kind of tried to put more advanced fighters with fewer per stand, making them 'appear' that much more powerful. I'm still undetermined how I'm going to base white star fighters.

I'm trying these Bergstrom rubber ones:

.5in Dia Versi-Base

using tiny nails then gluing the fighter to the top and then pushing them in. Easy to pickup, you can put as many as you want and you can separate them when your done.

Plus you cant beat 5 per $1

Its says it doesn't take paint well but mine are dark gray, not that blue from the web page.

I do like GQuans method though too.

Are you glueing the fighters onto the flat head of the nail? Careful with that, I tired something similar and my fighters didn't always want to stay which is why I switched to drilling into them and glueing the pins in that way. They are a bit more stable. Also, I had a bit of the edge of the pin sticking out on some of the smaller fighters (they didn't work at all for the shadow fighters)

Ya glue to the top. I'm testing it on Thoruns. They seem to have a pretty thick base post.

I'll see how they pan out this weekend when I take them to Vegas for the tourney.

Here's a link to a thread with several different ideas in it:
