Cosmic Mongoose
I posted these for someone asking about what ships you'd find in a ship junkyard like the one in Great Rift Adventure 1 - Islands In The Rift. The Bithorn and their planets were just sort of placeholders, replace them with your appropriate race. The quirks were rolled on a virtual D216 based on Yet Another Traveller Blog's Q is Quirks article.
The Lovely Nut was a prototype free trader created by the by the Bithorn people of Thorn, a lost human colony from the time of the long night. The Bithorn took nearly half a millennium to reverse engineer the jump and gravitic maneuver drives that went into the Lovely Nut, but they invested millions of credits worth of research to do it. The ship was hugely expensive and very crew intensive when it was built but it allowed them to begin to explore their local region of space and eventually join the Third Imperium. Built for moving cargo, the ship has an adequate cargo capacity of 95 tons, enough to move colonial equipment to new systems. The ship has 3 20-ton fuel bladders mounted in the cargo area to allow crossing the 2-parsec distance between Thorn and the nearest colony of Radir and return without refueling, though it rarely needs to do that. The ship has almost no automation so it requires a much larger crew compared to modern ships. Because of the lack of gravitic technology, the crew is housed in a rotating grav-deck that extends from the hull when in operation. Often, the ship would "hire on" ccrew membersfor a single jump to allow it to move a small number of passengers. There were 4 Skamisan's built before the Bithorn were able to improve their technology.
8 quirks
51. cooking activates fire alarm
109. infested with insects
123. looks like a piece of junk
151. random audible warnings (1/day)
18. autochef only makes flavorless gruel
192. transponder is twitchy
79. exhaust gas fills Engineering
38. computer glitch: (+1) to NAV rolls
The autochef is contaminated and smokes when used, which tends to set off fire alarm in the galley. It has also suffered a memory glitch, wiping out all its recipes and not allowing new ones to be uploaded. It can only produce a rather tasteless gruel. The unit must be replaced to fix these issues.
The crew area is infested with bedbugs. The staterooms must be overhauled or the ship thoroughly decontaminated to fix this issue.
While the hull is intact and fully functional, the ship is scarred and battered from hundreds of years of service.
The cockpit pilot console tends to randomly call out an audio warning at least once a day. There is no emergency, the console just has a glitch. On the other hand, the console has a highly accurate navigation calculator that provides a +1 DM to any navigation or astrogation check for movement with a system on a planet. The bridge will require an overhaul to repair this.
The ship's transponder tends to short out if there is any sort of power surge. This can be reset easily by resetting the breaker but may cause issues in systems with high law levels where transponders must be active at all times. A bridge overhaul in required to repair this issue.
The power plant in engineering is an unstable prototype that has a tendency to leak coolant that then burns off and releases clouds of noxious smelling smoke. Anyone that spends time in engineering without a filter mask must make a routine (6+) END check every hour or become nauseous and suffer a -1 DM to all actions.
The Silver Swallow was a prototype liner created by the by the Bithorn people of Thorn, a lost human colony from the time of the long night. The Bithorn took nearly half a millennium to reverse engineer the jump and gravitic maneuver drives that went into the Silver Swallow, but they invested millions of credits worth of research to do it. The ship was hugely expensive and very crew intensive when it was built but it allowed them to begin to explore their local region of space and eventually join the Third Imperium. Built for moving people, the ship has a minimal cargo capacity of 23 tons, and a passenger capacity of 24. 8 quirks
2. Turrets (-2) to repairs
100. high performance fuel scoops
210. vibrates violently when going into/out of jump
181. steward robot (can't leave ship)
16. annoying, mild gravity fluctuations
153. random warning lights (1/day)
112. interior doors work poorly
148. potable water tastes bad
Due to age and wear, the turrets of the Silver Swallow are in disrepair and should be replaced. Short of a complete overhaul, the turrets impose a -2 penalty on any repair attempt.
At some point in the past, the ship was refitted with high performance fuel scoops, fuel scoop operation times are halved.
Whenever the jump drive is activated, entering or leaving jumpspace, the ship vibrates harshly. This is not damaging but is very concerning to the passengers.
The ship has an ancient basic steward bot that is still functioning. It cannot leave the ship without the old brain resetting and causing it to refuse to leave. It functions as a basic skill level 1 steward and can do basic housekeeping.
Due to age and wear, the gravity rings on the ship no longer rotate completely smoothly. This is not dangerous but can cause fluctuations in gravity of 0.05Gs at any time.
There is an electrical glitch somewhere in engineering that causes the engineering master panel to turn on a random warning light. The console must be reset to clear the error. There is no actual fault when the glitch occurs. A full overhaul of engineering is needed to repair this glitch.
Over time, the doors in the gravity ring have warped slightly. This causes them to stick slightly and require a good shove or kick to open. An overhaul of the staterooms would be needed to repair this issue.
The water tanks and recycling system have suffered some corrosion over the years and while the water is still safe to drink, it tastes of mineral contamination. An overhaul of the staterooms is needed to repair this issue.
