Extra Plastic Stands

Mongoose
Is there a source for extra plastic stands and can you buy them in packs of more than 2 (ie Mongoose Pub)? I'd like to mount some of the HEAVY ships aka Adira, on two pegs, and also need some for asteroids etc...thanks for any help

Better still, get the metal ones from Mongoose. The plastics are too fragile for the larger models. Or at least the stem is.

GW bases actually fit the holes alot better TBH. i bin all my mongoose stands as soon as i get them out the pack.

i allways drill out the holes and fit screw in barrel connectors on all my fleets, its much easier for transport and more sturdy on whatever base, but i must agree gw bases are better, metal ones are good but cost so much for a decent amount of them

Since I discovered them I'm now really big on the Ninja Magic Connectors:

Clipping the stem means you're not using the fragile part, not having to glue the base to the model means easier transport, plus now it's modular and you actually need less bases.

It works fine right up to Vorlon Heavy Cruiser-sized objects:

Alternatively, you could always head to home depot and buy some metal rods of the right diameter and use those as custom stems.

I do Hybrid kind of thing. The idea came from a mix of people here on the list. I will try to take some pictures.

But I use the Plastic bases that come with the miniatures. I just use the base and put the stem up for uses on other things. But for the stem I use square bass tubes. I don't remember the demnsions but I use the larger one (like 1/8) and cut it to be hight I want. Being square going in to a round base I twisted it to make the hole a little bigger, I then put a little bit of epoxy glue in to make sure it stays there. Then for the ship I cut the smaller square tube (like 1/16) about 1/2 inch or less and glue it into the hole on the ship and let it dry. Then the smaller tube will fit just inside the larger and it will not rotate. It can support a fair amount of weight and looks pretty good as well.

I will try to take some pictures.

We have a thread in the modeling/painting section on this

http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=18830&highlight=basing

I posted some pics there as well.

the larger GW flying base is a wider base then the large mongoose base, and a little more stable with oversized models like the Adira (got my Poseidon on one!)
I'd also recommend a metal post (brass rod) for large models. plastic snaps like a twig in these cases. (and most others for that matter...!)

Wal-Mart is where I got mine.

Last I checked they had some metal bases but no metal stems.

I would think (for those who glue the stem to the ship) that weighting the base would make them more prone to breakage, since you'd now have weight at both ends stressing the stem.

Weighting the base lowers the center of gravity so ships fall over less.

If you are just using the nub at the end of the plastic post, it will break. So just cut it off and drill out the hole in the mini so the post fits into the new hole and mount it that way.

I'm using the ninja magic magnetic connectors (Similar to the clasp idea but probably more expensive and less time consuming), so no worry there.

and yes the reason for doing it is obvious, the side-effect however my be to make the stem more prone to breakage. Just a guess of course since I don't glue the stems to the ships.

In our group we use nails. You ream out the hole in the base to accomadate the nail. After sliding the nail through the hole add a dab of glue of your choice to keep the nail in place. To the bottom of the base I glue a fender washer to the bottom. You can find appropriate sized fender washers. The washer has to have a large enough hole to fit over the nail head. Drill out the model to fit the nail and glue the model to the nail. Cheap and rather easy. I haven't had a model break off. Just another way of mounting models.
