Drow War: Alternative Signature weapons??

Hi...i am running through the 1st book of the Drow War series and was wondering if anyone has come up with alternate ways of doing items that are NOT weapons or armor..I.E. i have a wizard(conjuration specialist) in my party..and i want him to have something other than a standard weapon.

The book mentions in Appendix I of book 1(in a grey box) the possibility of Variant Signature Items however doesn't give me enough to create such an item..anyone come up with the details on such an item??

My sorcerer has a cloak for his signature item. You can pretty much use the armour table for all the powers it can have. The only difference is that any +s that get put on the cloak are resistance bonuses to saving throws rather than AC bonuses.

Something like a staff then? You would have to go through all of the powers for standard staffs and assign + ratings to each, but it should be doable.

ok..a staff like that might work..but staves all, basically, have multiple spell-like functions how would you assign bonuses to them? what caster level would they be at? how many times per day would they be cast? arrrgggh..my head hurts...

oh i forgot to mention...how many spells? and what spell level would they be at? .....arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrgggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhh

The last thing that a sorcerer needs is more spells per day! In my party the only person who never runs out of spells to cast is the sorcerer.

If I'd given him a staff that cast spells he'd never need it unless it was able to cast spells that he doesn't know.

I purchase the magic item compendium and have modified some things out of that based around there GP value.

Paladin Sword
Barbarian Axe
Druid Armour
Thief Rapier
Monk Bracers (combat and some special abilities)
Wizard Robe
Sorcerer Amulet (based around the war wizards cloak)

My group have just finished with the Ragged Man.

I am still looking specifically for a flexible (flexible in the ability to choose the special abilities of the item I mean) wizardly type item...i was thinking maybe the signature item gains the wizard the ability to use a specific meta-magic feat..say once per day without raising the level of the spell...so every Bonus point would be worth one feat that can be used in such a way (that ONE 'free' feat would be allowed once/day though).

Though i am not sure how balanced this would be..any thoughts?
