Do this to your sst game to make it better!

True Turtle, but are you really eliminating the need to tote around a number of books? Maybe. But even with war machine players around here I see them with the one big book, and then a few of the update books too. So, it's a toss up between building a force from 1 book or from a mess of books, isn't it? Pardon me for enjoying the convience of having to refer to 1 book to make my army.

And, btw, I'm a playtester (or soon to be ex-play tester... depends on if they like me after my ranting) for SST:Ev.

Hiro: the main reason people tote around a bunch of Warmachine books is cos they tend to carry rules updates as well as stats (I've actually begun to just bring my Hordes book to games cos it's got almost all the new rules in it!) - for playing people just refer to the cards. Privateer are bringing out a revised version of the main rulebook and they say it's going to be the stable ruleset for at least a couple of years. but i can see something similar for SST/BFE, whereby you only need the book as a reference and to check stats before you buy the units.

And again, 1 Army book vs. a Mess of update books? For me, convience of having 1 book outweighs the whole library Matt wanted to try to avoid by eliminating the army books.

Effectively, you're right, that's what SST:Ev is going to be. I don't like it, but I'm only supposed to test the rules, not make marketing decisions.

I totally see where you're coming from, but unless they hold off on adding new forces or units until a new edition of the rules come out, there's gonna have to be update books (or PDFs) released as a companion to said new factions, just for the platoon lists, unit options and to give players a chance to check the stats out before deciding to drop their $30 or not.

True, but that's what they had going on before the whole edition switch.

S&P:
- MI Cap Trooper Neo Dog Squads
- Recruit Squads
- Veteran Squads
- 2006 Update for SST v1

Wont someone please think of the fluff!?!??!?

Actually Im serious there, a couple of cards in a binder does not an army book make... Some new artwork and around ten pages of background are the minimum.
I liked the idea of an update book containing all the expansions printed in S&P over that year, and I'd rather see a book thats worth buying than something like the v1 army books (Which it has to be said were a lil' dissapointing).

This aparant move away from any kind of depth in SST is kinda worrying
to be honest.

Even with S&P, you're gonna end up with a bunch of printout. It's not somethign you can easily escape from in gaming.

I liked how Flames of War handled updates... you pasted them into your book..

And Max, you're right. We're going to have fluff for the first four races, and then we'll end up getting updates to play the other races with more fluff, and heaven help you if you play one of hte other races..so instead of just one book to lug around, you have two books. And not with just the information you need/want.

I never really had any issue with more than one reaction, as the jams on 1's piled up and the fire power slacked off, and the bugs got closer and closer each time.

I really like the reaction systems used in the rules, still not a big fan of I go You Go systems, but its a great middle ground.

From comments I hope they do not dumb the rules down like GW has over the years, gamers are on avg able to handle rules.

Write the rules well, make then understandable, but please do not dumb them down.

Though I am against an Overload of factions.
I think even for SST Evo a maximum of 6 Races would be best.
If all of these Factions are as variable and versitale as the original three are that should be far more than enough.

Games get imbalanced and ugly to play if you have to many factions.
And I also don't see 10 Races fitting into SST without raping the fluff.

I agree unless the majority of those races are merely 'natives' and basically non-spacefaring. Very similar to how the skinnies appeared in the CGI - not unadvanced, but simply not expanded to space... so they would never be a true threat like the Arachnids, and so for the time being are not bothered with.

except for when your platoon crash lands... lol
