[CONAN] NonLethal Damage

This rule bugs me a bit. It's almost perfect, except for one thing...

If you slap someone across the face during a melee doing one point of damage (let's say you've got STR 10 and rolled a 1 for damage) and still have 10 hit points left, then you are unconscious, not dead, after being whacked with a sword by your enemy for another 9 points of damage.

That's a lot of lethal damage being dealt with the sword--only 1 point of non-lethal damage.

What really gets me is that there's no way to kill the target outside of rendering him unconscous then killing him

You can't run him through with your sword! You've got to beat him unconsious first.

Why not go out to your troops, slap 'em in face a few times and give 'em about 5 points of non-lethal damage, then send 'em out to fight. Chances are most of them will be knocked unconscious instead of outright killed during their battles. This is a great way to exploit a loophole in the rules!*

*I would never allow this in a game--just making a point.

You feeling alittle disorinented S4, to much New Year festivals? :)

Maybe. I just did a bloody idiot donkey move in a poker tourney and got knocked out. Maybe I'm a little loco right now.

The question is:

If you have -3 hp and 1 hp of nonlethal damage, are you unconscious and dying or just unconscious?

Read the rule about nonlethal damage, then answer the question.

If you have negative HP from lethal damage, you are unconscious and dying. If you have negative HP from nonlethal damage, you just stay unconscious longer. So if a character has 1 point of non-lethal, but is in -3 hp total, yes, he is bleeding and dying.

So yeah, technically you could beat someone to -9580 HP with non-lethal damage, then it would take him a looooooooooooooooooooooong time to wake up.

I don't mind that abstraction so much, what bother me is how easy it is to inflict non-lethal damage with, say, a greatsword. Just take -4 to hit and you are good to go.

But, according to the book, going unconscious from nonlethal damage doesn't matter if nonlethal damage went up or real damage went down...

So, what you're saying can't be correct.

Warrior has 10hp of damage in total, he now at 10 hps, but the 12pt of NL has dropped him so he falls unconscious! But he will NOT bleed to death!

This part understood.

Here's what's not understood.

Warrior has 13 hp and has taken 12 NL points. Then, he's hit for 15 points of real damage, taking him to -2 hp and 12 NL points.

Is he unconscious and dying, or just unconscious?

Both. Which mostly means, unconcious and dying.

NL and L damage are completely seperate, except for the fact that taking lethal damage reduces your capacity for taking NL damage. In your example, he is both, and independently, unconcious because his NL damage is higher than his HP and unconcious and dying becuse his lethal damage has taken him below 0. If some kind soul restores his HPs to 1, he will still be unconcious, and if someone waves a wand and cures all his NL damage he will still be unconcious and dying. Sucks to be him!
