Choosing Sub-skills

Okay. Trying this out. Discussion at the table. Do you get a number of points in Sub-skills equal to the number of points in Branch Skills?
4 in Might let's you buy 2 in Fighting, 1 in Athletics, 1 in Endurance?
Then you add your Guardian Shield Sub-skills on top of that?
Or, are the points from your Guardian Shield the only points you have in Sub-skills at Character Creation?

'Shield Maidens possess a number of sub-skills equal to their respective Branch skills; if 3 points are placed into the Observation Branch skill, the Shield Maiden possesses 3 Observation sub-skills. She gains additional points in subskills when creating the Guardian Shield, up to a maximum of 5 points in any sub-skill.'
