Careers

Well with the first book we get 12 career types and 36 separate careers. What else could a player want?

Seriously what more do people want to see as far as careers? Or do you think the core book nailed all the careers?

I find it slightly unclear in the rules, when a character cannot return to a career does that mean that the character may not return to the other two careers in the same section as well? I could see say a noble dilletante being ejected from his career and forced to become a diplomat or administrator. On the other hand an ejection from the navy would seem to mean not being transfered.

Some of the careers I'd kindo like to see are noble servants, geisha-like careers (yes some nods to Serenity here), and perhaps some more specialized science careers.

Another thing for specialization is perhaps add in some short careers, of only 2 years. Probably without mustering out benefits but with higher chance for gaining skills or some built in perks and no advancement.

As far as returning to a career if you get kicked out, I house-ruled that in the military ones, once you're out of a branch of service, you're out completely. No going back to the other careers. However, I did allow people to make a 'Transfer' roll instead of a promotion roll to change specialties in that branch of the military.

Military being Navy, Marines, Scouts, Army.

For the other careers, I didn't allow transferring per se, but you could go to a different specialty in that career after getting kicked out of one if you made another acceptance roll.

FP, who can't wait for Mercenary and High Guard.

I like the idea of a smaller "extra activity" kind of thing. So my Marine is also an amateur rock hound. He learns some Science Skills (Geology 1?) or some such. Could make for some interesting combos as you have your “main” career and additional interests. But these short careers should not make the character any different then if the character followed a normal creation process. By that I mean they should not get any more skills or additional perks unless they are offset in some way.

Just my .02

I would probably allow a player to pick up one or two "hobbies" as 0 level skills, but they would have to match the characters background and the skills would have to be of a type that would not see much use.

I don't know what i want, but I know I would like to see more careers, the basics are great, and the numbers of skills feels right, so Don't have any immediate, I NEED THIS NOW sorts of things.

But I know they will show up laters.

Well one that crossed my mind was a true Steward career. Someone who specializes in dealing with guests. Skills might include Steward (of course), Admin, Computer, Diplomat, and Art of various kinds.

Ships require them, so they should exist.

I would like to see an education track, like a 4-year University term and an Advanced Education term. You could also have a Military Academy.

Another career I think would be good is Clergy. More then once they have shown up as “characters” in stories and other SciFi media.

I'd be interested in a Servant career as well as Steward. It could have some possibilities. I'm thinking of a campaign right now with an NPC noble and the PCs as his minders. Yacht crew, bodyguards, valet, butler...

"Sir the wine is opened, I've got the blood stains out of your clothes. Your rifle is clean and put away and I've had that creepy little merchant dealt with severely."

Either that or I'll play it for comedy and have him ignore everything around him.

The education track (somewhat like the one in Traveller TNE) seems to
be a good idea, and I also like the proposed Steward and Clergy careers
- especially the Clergy career, because it would be a most interesting ad-
dition for my setting. :D

By the way, one of the German SF RPGs has a clergy career and a couple
of specializations for it, for example missionary (someone with an excel-
lent reason to travel) and shaman (for low-tech cultures).

I'll second the University idea - it certainly was present in T20 and to my mind worked well - I think you probably want to block it down to a single 4 year term though, use Scholar to cover post grad stuff. I guess the Scholar track kinda covers it though - to some extent that might cover the Clergy as well - if not perfectly.

I'd like to see awards make a comeback into the career tracks.

Currently the military careers are all 'Imperial', there's no 'Mercenary' career though as a wild stab in the dark.....the upcoming Mercenary book ;)

Also the Military Careers are Space bound to quite an extent - or at least highly space interactive. Id like to see a 'Planetary Defence Force' career covering things like aircraft pilots, wet navy etc. I can see a role for groundpounding in there - but the Army career alreadydoes that quite well. Therefore these might fit better as extra specialities for existing military careers.

Actually...

...there are six of them.

I looked at Scholar to make a Clergy, but it does not work out very well.

When discussing some of these "extra" careers I think the main differance will be the combination of skills open to the character in the ChaGen process.

Expand the Citizen career.

Include:
Servant (non-space types)
Steward (space servants)

Under Clergy, you could have Missionary, Shaman (Low Tech) and Priest(ess) although a better term might be used for the last one.

Missionaries would have survival and construction skills. Priests would have admin and liaison skills as well as Performance(Voice).

I could also see a variation of the PSI for the Shaman! Make him/her actually be able to do things that mere mortals cannot comprehend...

LOTS of possibilities here!

Sounds like an S&P article or three...

Another option for clergy is the technical priesthoods from TNE. Basically, a world where the church controls all of the remaining high tech and may or may not know how to fix it.

I've been writing up some house rules for University, Naval Academy, Military Academy, and Medical School pre-enlistment options. (Roughly based on a CT document from Golan2072, I believe.)

I'll post them once they are in a usable form. The basic idea being that you get an Edu boost and a few skills, but sacrifice a terms worth of benefits and promotions.

You could create a custom life events table (using a 6 by 6 matrix?) that added hobby skills, in the same way that special events, like psionics, occur.

I for one aren't too keen on university/academy. I feel that kind of stuff is already accounted for in EDU and chargen. But whatever you fancy.

How about an Adventurer, or Pioneer, career type. Sub types Prospector, Treasure Seeker, and Hunter.

A proper Athlete type would be good, too. Performer just doesn't hack it. ;)
