Actual physics question here: what would be the behavior of a lifting gas on in a vaccum ? Assuming the envelope was strong enough, obviously.

It'd fill up the envelope and just sit there. In order to lift, the balloon's contents need to be lower density than the stuff around it, and you obviously can't be lower density than vacuum.

No risk of starting an argument with me, but I think that Voodoo B Do had an epiphany.
He realized that you could build a (say 50 dTon) small craft with a MD, JD, PP and an inflatable bladder that would expand the ship volume to 100 dTons and allow it to ‘Jump’.

It has nothing to do with your conversation, but you wanted to know “what is your point here, exactly” and that was his point. [We live in such a strange world.]
