BF Evo, future weapons

Well, I'm impressed. Hiro, has anyone that's doing the tests decided to code-name the term X numbers of Mega-Joules as X numbers of "Micheal Jacksons"? It would sure keep the other side guessing for at least awhile, right? OK, I take it back. Sorry...

*shakes his head* They'd rather go with Mike Foley in that case, BuShips.

Yeah, but the initials don't fit as nicely and he doesn't light up sidewalk tiles to the sounds of "Billie Jean". I know what you mean, though. I was probably attempting to get too much mileage combining the "old" MJ with the one we know now. Timing as they say is everything with comedy. I only missed that one by 20 years...

Five years ago, New Scientist covered plans by the Pentagon’s research arm, DARPA, to build a robotic exoskeleton that would let GIs run faster, leap further and carry more. It was an interesting and ambitious idea - the plan was to have a miniature internal combustion engine moving each powered joint. But we heard no more about it and I just assumed the notion had been quietly dropped.

Far from it. I recently spoke to John Main, chief of DARPA’s exoskeleton program. He says the project is very much alive and that exoskeletons will be delivered for Army testing in 2008. After 14 companies and universities initially (circa 2001) came up with different designs, they have selected the firm that will build the beast: Sarcos of Salt Lake City in Utah, US.

Sarcos has come up with a system that uses just one engine instead of lots of them. The engine, and a tank containing a 24-hour supply of fuel, will be slung “beneath your rear end”, says Main. The engine (a turbine, two-stroke or four stroke - they haven’t decided yet) will then compress hydraulic fluid which will be distributed via high pressure lines to servo valves on each joint, amplifying the force used to move each limb when the wearer’s motion is sensed.

Main tried it out himself recently. “It makes you feel really, really strong. You get the sensation that you have a lot of strength. I sort of felt like The Hulk and I’m a skinny guy. I wore a 100-pound weight on my back and it felt I was carrying nothing like that amount,” he says. And he was only wearing the lower body - the legs and back support section.

Once the legs are mated to the powered arms, the full "powerloader" exoskeleton will be even stronger. “The upper body portion has arms that can hold a 40-pound weight at arms length for three minutes,” Main says.

Of course, running an internal combustion engine with the power of a scooter will be “smelly and loud”, say Main, and the exo won’t be allowed indoors by the US Occupational Health and Safety Administration. “The OSHA won’t let it run inside a building because basically it’s a vehicle,” says Main.

Then again, if you have superhuman strength, rules about building entry will be little bother: presumably you can just tear a wall off.

I wondered if the exoskeleton was easy to use. “Well, it was fun. Not everybody gets to do this. It’s an exercise in learning, like learning to ride a bike for the first time. You have to get your centre of gravity right. It’s completely alien.”

2008 baby!

Hiro, I wonder if Sarcos is really an acronym, eh?

Sicon Ambulatory-feedback Response Coordination System (Powersuit MK1)...

Hmm, maybe a handle of "XM307/XUV" ?

Does Matthew know about this for BFE useage? It looks rather advanced  (and nasty). Hey, Matt???

In battlefield Evo you have the pred air unit, and the talon sword, but its so easy to add units yourself, unlike most systems ie/

XM307 25MM MG
RANGE 40"
DAMAGE 2XD6+2 *
-2 TO ARMOUR ROLLS

* With airburst ammo, d6+1 standed 25mm

Added to a ground unit is easy also..
Not sure what i can say about the rules until the basic come out, which i think is soon.
But they great thing about Evo, is as soon as you seen it on the news, you can run off ans make some stats up..

Xm8 is so sexy, i have a airsoft version, great to hold and to use, sad the army are not using these guns, just sticking to the m4/m16...

And colt would run off and cry if it lost its deal with the army....?
I do like the Scar as well, maybe a airsoft version in 2007

I wouldn't be too quick to include it, the narration in the company video mentioned the salient point that the ammunition which the weapon is to fire is still under development. It's worth noting that the 20mm grenade or smart shells for the old OICW turned out to be too small. Yes they went off with a bang, but to have a effect on a soldier wearing body armour they would have to directly hit the soldier in question. Not exactly the result you want when you are airbursting rounds above a target behind cover or in a room. OK this time it's a 25mm grenade but it's worth noting that that's been around in development for just as long as the 20mm one and is that extra 5mm going to be enough?

Cheers

Derek
