Beyond the Abyss - Groups and Fleet listings

triggy organised it, did the tourney pack and got the mongoose support so thanks go to him. me I am just collating all the information and letting people know where they stand etc.

Well your fine work on the vassal mod kinda made it possible too you know 8)

Thanks to the both of you then and the mongoose for supporting it.
We should do it again when 2nd edition is out.

Thank you for the kind words and I echo the thanks for katadder collecting and organising the results and for his work on the Vassal mod itself.

Still everything to play for in both groups...three players going for second place in each.

Played tneva tonight and it was a good game that went well into turn 5 before tipping significantly one way

Call to Arms
minimal terrain

Triggy
Maximus stack

tneva
Hermes, Novas, Omega

Maximuses did their usual thing and flew around the one main asteroid field, only coming into range on turn 4 (mainly turn 5 actually) and the magnuses squared off against the hermes and fighters. Two Hermes were lost but one Magnus was taken down in return before it could punch through the line.

Then everyone started manoeuvring (the Omega still not having fired its beams) and the fighters scored a big hit, taking down a Maximus (aided by a 6-6 crit but not entirely unexpected). The game looked tough from here for the Centauri and it all really came down to whether they could take out the Nova before it passed them. Four Maximuses shot, the final one reducing it to about one third left but got the big 6-6 crit and finished it off. There was a moderate chance of the straglers taking out the Nova but this would have been 50-50 so the crit was welcome.

From here, the EA didn't have enough ships to evade the Centauri. A Maximus was finished off by fighters, the Omega fled and the last Nova was hunted down.

39-20 on VPs
15-5 on TPs

It was a great game and tneva gave me more than a laugh or two :)

Triggy, I have you up for tomorrow at 5 pm Chicago time, I believe. Davesaint follows the night after.

JayRaider, I'm sorry I missed you earlier; VASSAL's stability leaves ... less than desired results sometimes. Perhaps Thursday sometime? I am unavailable from 9 AM-5 PM in Chicago's Central Daylight time, but you can pick any time after that and I'd be good.

To the end!

Yeah great game Triggy.

Not that it was matter of avoiding centauri's. It was brawl with punches traded left and right. Thank god for Nova's all-around firepower!

That omega has been pretty much total disaster whole tournament. Wish I had taken 2 more nova's. That way I could have won this game :D More all-around firepower and 4 extra fighters.

Problem for my fleet was facing heaps of hull 6 ships(7), most of them having interceptors. That's just not cool! Those maximuses even possessed firepower that could seriously dent poor old hull 5 nova...

Splendid game. Closest game I have played in this tournament and for a change my network didn't mess up...Best game so far by far.

well you guys only got until saturday morning and Czushlag has 3 games to do but seems like hes organising most. jayraider you have 2 to do, one with Czuschlag and one with Tneva.
group 2 Operative 6678 needs to organise his 2 games with Romu and Humbaba.

My game with operative6678 is scheduled, we're playing friday morning.
Suspense till the end

Should get Jayraider game on thursday or friday, depending on when he has time.

Wohoo! Didn't end up last ;-) Some improvement. Guess my refusal to fight to the death if battle is lost gives some results ;-)

Triggy was a great sport in allowing for a matchup where we could play during the week. Unfortunately, it meant that it was at about 11:30 his time, and I didn't feel exhausted, so I don't think I got the full Triggy Experience. I might very well had lost if I was working on low sleep and he was fresh. I kinda feel bad about that.

Nevertheless, the battle still was tilting slightly his way nearing the end of Turn 4, with me killing a Maximus and a Corvan in exchange for Two Heavy Raiders when a lucky set of pulse from the Mothership hit an undamaged Maximus with a full interceptor suite and generated a 6-6 to kill it outright with a magic beebee. It was a major moment that all turned on really disgusting luck. I had a small positional advantage, so I had most of the cards at this point -- it was a really critical moment of luck.

Knowing he needed some serious points he did the EXACT right move, went for the gusto, committed to trying to kill the Mothership ... and get a 6-6 right back from the first set of beam from the first Magnus! Some Twin Arrays then finished the combo with a 3-6 so it couldn't run away. Beautiful -- the game was completely on with a madcap rush to see if I could kill the Magnuses before he crippled (once the GEG 4 goes down, so does the Mothership) or decrewed the beast, which would get him to 50 points, whether he survived or not.

The game had everything -- breaching pods boarding Maximus, All Stop and Pivot, full GEG usage, 4 Dice of Kitchen Sink (Range 3, Weak, Precise). In the end, the Maximus and Magnus were enough to Skeleton Crew the Mothership and load it up with 6 or so critical effects, but it was going to live through the experience. SC is worth 1/4 of the 40 points --- but that just wasn't enough when the Magnus finally went down to the Neutron Cannons.

I know if that lucky Critical hadn't happened, the extra Maximus would probably have been enough to make the Mothership very dead. Compelling stuff.

I'm not exhausted -- I'm exhilarated, and eager to see what the match would be like when Triggy has some full rest. The quality of play also left me very hopeful about 2nd Ed.

Thank you, Triggy!

Logfile of the fight was sent to Tneva82's website -- hopefully, you can check it out there soon.

Result: 56-20.
Points 19-1, Drakh.

Wow, I got really lucky with that result from Czuchlag and Triggy. Czuchlag and I are fighting tonight and it's going to be a rough fight for the Pak. Tonights battle may very well decide the number 1 seed out of group A.

I would like to place my vote for Triggy in the best sportsman competition. He was a lot of fun to play against.

Group A was decided last night with Czuschlag beating davesaint 14-6 to leave those 2 as the top 2. the only factor left there is who is 1st and who is 2nd but Czuschlag needs 7 points from his game against jayraider to take 1st place for the semis.
group B operative you really need to get your 2 games in to finish this off.

We started our game but operative was getting ill so we rescheduled to tomorow morning, I hope he is feeling better and we can finish it on time :)

Dunno if he already arranged his match against humbaba tho.

ok we just finished it, was a little bit onesided as he was out of luck and i seem to have plenty :?

We stopped when he only had his omega with 0 spd, nsa and no damage control while i only lost one patrol ship and was about to send troops from my whole fleet on his omega. So i guess it's 20-0

The first 2 turns were fun, then it went downhill for him, felt a little bad for you there operative cos it musn't have been very funny. Anytime for a rematch !

Anyway i think it settles it for group B. Sorry humbaba :)

*shrug*

Well I'd imagine it would go on the results between the two of Romu and myself, in which case that'd put him top and me second!

I don't know if there was a definite ruling one way or t'other but that seems the fairest and most logical to me.

well as they are tied I am going to take the result from the game between these 2. Romu beat Itkovian so Group listings is as follows:

Player..........Games played............Points
Group A
Davesaint............5.........................75
Czuschlag............4.........................69
Triggy..................5........................61
Tneva..................4.........................27
LaranosTZ............5.........................22

Group B
Romu..................4..........................55
Itkovian...............4..........................55
Emp Penguin........4..........................39
Humbaba.............3..........................30
Operative6678.....3...........................1

currently the semi-final games are:
Davesaint versus Itkovian
Czuschlag versus Romu

obviously if Csuchlag gets his game in versus Jayraider tonight this could change and I will let you know final placings tomorrow. humbab and operatives game is immaterial on qualifying for group stage but feel free to play it.

Can everyone start sending me their choices for most sporting opponent by PM please. the most sporting from group B will get an auto +1 to score to see who wins between group A and B (due to less players).
