Triggy was a great sport in allowing for a matchup where we could play during the week. Unfortunately, it meant that it was at about 11:30 his time, and I didn't feel exhausted, so I don't think I got the full Triggy Experience. I might very well had lost if I was working on low sleep and he was fresh. I kinda feel bad about that.
Nevertheless, the battle still was tilting slightly his way nearing the end of Turn 4, with me killing a Maximus and a Corvan in exchange for Two Heavy Raiders when a lucky set of pulse from the Mothership hit an undamaged Maximus with a full interceptor suite and generated a 6-6 to kill it outright with a magic beebee. It was a major moment that all turned on really disgusting luck. I had a small positional advantage, so I had most of the cards at this point -- it was a really critical moment of luck.
Knowing he needed some serious points he did the EXACT right move, went for the gusto, committed to trying to kill the Mothership ... and get a 6-6 right back from the first set of beam from the first Magnus! Some Twin Arrays then finished the combo with a 3-6 so it couldn't run away. Beautiful -- the game was completely on with a madcap rush to see if I could kill the Magnuses before he crippled (once the GEG 4 goes down, so does the Mothership) or decrewed the beast, which would get him to 50 points, whether he survived or not.
The game had everything -- breaching pods boarding Maximus, All Stop and Pivot, full GEG usage, 4 Dice of Kitchen Sink (Range 3, Weak, Precise). In the end, the Maximus and Magnus were enough to Skeleton Crew the Mothership and load it up with 6 or so critical effects, but it was going to live through the experience. SC is worth 1/4 of the 40 points --- but that just wasn't enough when the Magnus finally went down to the Neutron Cannons.
I know if that lucky Critical hadn't happened, the extra Maximus would probably have been enough to make the Mothership very dead. Compelling stuff.
I'm not exhausted -- I'm exhilarated, and eager to see what the match would be like when Triggy has some full rest. The quality of play also left me very hopeful about 2nd Ed.
Thank you, Triggy!
Logfile of the fight was sent to Tneva82's website -- hopefully, you can check it out there soon.
