Kubrick is, and always will be, my favorite director.

On a similar trivia note: the Mission Controller in 2001 was a USAF air traffic controller. Kubrick was looking for that "calm, professional" voice and he found it in a guy who was working at RAF Lakenheath.

The man was a genius and had an incredible eye for detail. It makes me wonder what SST would have been like if Stanley had made it...

Gotto go with R Lee Ermey, AKA Gunney Hartman,

I am Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, your senior drill instructor, fropm now on you will speak only when spoken to, and the first words and the lasts out of you filthy sewers will be "Sir" do you maggots understand that?

SIR, YES SIR!

Bullspit, sound off like you got a pair.

SIR, YES SIR!

8) (that was said from memory.....)

also heres a piece of interesting useless info, did you know that R Lee Ermey, played the same role (Hartman) in a little known movie (except to you old salts) called The Boys of Company C.

If Kubrick had made it? It would have been overlong, boring and probably had Tom Cruise in it!

Not a fan of Mr Kubrick, Eyes Wide Shut is one of the worst films ever made, 2001 over-hyped, and even Full Metal Jacket is only good until they get to Vietnam!

2001 over-hyped? *gasps* That film STILL stands with anything being done today!!!!! (IMHO :) ) STRIKE HIM, HIWO! MOST FURIOUSWY!!!!

FMJ? Yeah, the Vietnam part was marginal...but did have some incredible moments. Animal Mother!

Eyes Wide Shut? Ok...I'll give you that one. I'm no fan of Cruise or Kidman.

But what about A Clockwork Orange? Dr. Strangelove? Paths of Glory? Lolita? Barry Lyndon?

If you guys like the movie Full Metal Jacket; the book it's based on is

The Short Timers

I can't remember the author though. It gives you the original characters' personalities and, it really good.

Kiw the Wabbit Kiw the Wabbit Kiw the Waaabbiiiiit!!! Huhuhuhuh

Sorry I had to throw that in. :D

OUTSIDE, NOW

Well i also think that kubrick isn't an undisputable genius.
FMJ was cool in drillcamp, but the vietnam part did suck.
2001 was just stupid. HAL's cool, yeah, but all that psychedelic crap in the end...oh comeon!

both not was i expect from a war/scifi movie.
but clockwork orange, now THAT was a great

@topic
what about the guy from that movie where that woman (i think the name was jane) wnats to join the marines?
I don't remember the english title of the movie, nor the name of the drill sergeant, sadly :(

OK I give you Dr Strangelove, but I think that's largely due to the amazing Peter Sellers

Paths of Glory I've not seen but it sounds good.
Lolita? I've seen the remake and read the novel, hated both so I doubt I'd like the original

DAmn, we forgot two great Sgts from the movies...

Gunny Highway (Clint Eastwood) from Heartbreak Ridge

The Sgt played by Sam Elliot in We Were Soldiers Once

"Any of you call me grandpa and I'll kill you."
after constantly berating the soldier who kept saying good day to him in peacetime "what's so F&^#^!# good about it" he turns to the kid at the end of the battle and says "that was a good day."
