ACTA's new competition

I'll might do what I did with the SW minis game. Buy a whole lot, play it until I'm bored with it (it is beer and pretzels), then sell the figures individually and make all my money selling singles. Might not though, it is getting released around Xmas time, the season that is a financial vacuum any way.

well lets be honest its going to sell like hotcakes, just look at the star wars minis and d&d minis games so far. Sure therye simply beer & pretzel games when alls said and done but they ARE notheless good for a laugh :P

Im not going to go nuts and buy loads and loads but I WILL get some :P

As to random ships, it worked for them in D&D minis and in Star Wars Minis and it worked for Pirates of the Spanish main..... the thing with random minis is that as much as I hate to admit it, it IS fun to collect the damnable things not knowing exactly what youre going to get (also you tend to actualy GET alot more ships for your money in terms of sheer numbers).

All in all I wouldn't really call it 'competition' for ACTA any more than I would call magic tha gathering competition for poker or D&D miniatures competition for Warhammer 40k etc etc

I think the Munchkins are going to lap em up, the mature gamer (experience wise) is going to be a little hesitant

I may get the starter set and thats about it

I fear this one is already lost to the temptations of the Dark Side.

This is how it always starts.

"It can't hurt to call on the dark side for just a little more power, can it?"
"I'm only going to do it once."
"It's for a good cause."
"Just this once more."
"I'm doing it to help others."
"The power of the dark side really can be used for a good purpose."
"I'm not straying from the light, no really I'm not."
"Maybe just a little more."
"See, it's okay. I can handle it."
"DIE LITTLE JEDI TRAINEES! MUA HA HA HA HA"

*shakes head sadly*

You mean the daft side???

Hm. Just from looking at the packing list making a Super Star Destroyer and it's rebel equivalent the base ships seems like a bad idea. The SSD isn't at the top end of the setting's scale of ships, but it's pretty freaking close...

I would think they would focus on a standard Star Destroyer and smaller Rebel ship.

The big thing for this is, like ACTA, how well the rules are done, i think. They need to be fun and fast and, importantly, make fighters 'properly valuable' to fit the setting.

I would not call those the base ships for the game. There will be 4 size classes for ships, and those 2 ships I think are the only ones that go in the largest class. All the other 58 ships in that release fall into one of the other size classes (fighters, small ships, capital ships).

Basically i will get some models.

And then start one freaking ACTA conversion thread after another around here.

And THEN we can have cross games :D Can the Narn/Rebel alliance take out the evil SSD, flanked by Marathons and Warlocks?

I meant as in (in most games) the 'box set' contents tend to be middle-of-the-road for the game, not the extremes.

I only skimmed the rules. Do they expect games to take place on the smallish 20 x 20 or so grid they use in the demo pics, or is that just for starter games/demonstration purposes?

yeah, I can see me picking up a few sets, but not religiously. Be handy for Star wars minis to use in an ActA conversion. anyone have photos of the ships or a list of what's in the set?

That's what I was thinking! Star Wars ActA conversion would be cool...still not too sure about the quality of the minis so pics would be good. I haven't seen any but according to www.rebelscum.com (cool domain name) the following models are in the November release:

STARSHIP BATTLES - Upcoming Set (November 2006)
__ ## ARC-170 Fighter
__ ## B-Wing Fighter
__ ## Darth Vader's TIE Fighter
__ ## Dash Rendar's Outrider
__ ## Droid Tri-Fighter
__ ## Executor
__ ## Home One
__ ## Imperial Shuttle
__ ## Jedi Starfighter (ROTS)
__ ## Millennium Falcon
__ ## Mon Calamari Cruiser
__ ## Republic Attack Cruiser
__ ## Slave 1
__ ## TIE Fighter
__ ## TIE Interceptor
__ ## Vulture Droid
__ ## X-Wing Fighter
__ ## Y-Wing Fighter

I wonder how they will cope with battles between star destroyers and x-wings?

"I have a star destroyer, thats 10,000 points."
"I've got 500 X-wings at 20 points apeice." :)

But the Death Star automatically looses as its has no anti-fighter weapons...

No, just hundreds of TIE fighters and defence towers covering the important runs into critical areas...the question is will they incorporate the possibility of a single fighter taking it down (however unlikely that would be)?

Except the tower mounted guns never actually hit anything, being designed to fire at captial ships. However the large numbers of TIE Fighters would kind of make it necessary for the Imperial player to take out a lone as well...

The newest edition of Twilight Imperium has 'War Spheres' which resemble (but not in a copyright infringing way, of course!) a certain sci-fi space station of unusual size. they even added a rule allowing a lucky shot to take it down, but I believe it requires throwing a lot of fighters at it to ahve even a remotely good chance...

well they did launch a few but not even a full squadron. and why not launch them all? surely you want all rebels dead, and if you kill the base the rebel fighters will just go into hyperspace and form a new HQ with other rebels so kind of pointless exercise. kill all the rebels not just their current base.
