ACTA's new competition

Well, I just scan- read the rulebook, and one thing comes to mind; beer and pretzels. (OK, two things.)
There are no hidden depths to it, are there? It's not much more complicated than a Cheapass Game, by the looks of things.
Fun but basically chinese takeaway food- after each game, you still don't feel full.
It is going to sell on the license, it is going to sell on it's online living rulebook, it's going to sell on collectibility, but it's not got much of a future as far as depth of gameplay goes. Unfortunately, I don't expect that to matter.

Ummm, why have they paired a Mon Cal Cruiser against a Super Star Destroyer?

I mean barring any suicidal rebel fighter pilots, surely the Mon Cal is going to gets its stern handed to it on a plate?

Nick

Hmm, love the scaled complexity of the victory conditions:

The Basic Rules: You win by destroying all the starships in your enemy’s fleet.

The Advanced Rules: You win by defeating all the starships in the enemy fleet.

I'm sure the devils in the detail :roll: :lol:

Regards
Carl

and the rest :D

Might be good, but it needs to change from D20 - D20 is far too random.

Gonna get me a load of these cos I love Star Wars lol :lol:

Damn, man, I just had peking ribs, Mongolian beef with noodles and prawn crackers that'll last me to tomorrow lunchtime... bloody marvellous!

And a certain blonde who served it is painting my Sharlin too (and that's NOT a metaphor).

Wulf

EDIT: Mongolian, not Manchurian. Damn, I always get that wrong... Maybe it's Mancunian?

Lucky you, tomorrow I'm going to be on a bus with thirty- odd hairy maniacs going down to Battle Abbey, starvation mitigated only by burger vans and the beer tent. Technically, I should be packing right now...that's what mornings are for, isn't it?

So where were those Star Wars: ACTA conversions again? I'm sure my LGS will start flogging the 'Common' stuff for a pittance in no time at all.

Minature games where you get random models. Never understood why really. (Well besides the crak-like addiction approach).

Yeah right. I've had a blonde "paint my sharlin" before. :lol:

I don't think any CTA players will stop playing because there's a Star Wars space combat game out.

Technically ACTA has already lost. Lets be honest here, Star Wars fans + Casual Gamers far outnumber B5 fans and more serious gamers.

Will it impact ACTA's sales? Doubtful. They're generally targetting different markets. There's some slight overlap but not too much.

Although I can't find a good picture of what their minis look like. I mean if they look good it might be fun for some ACTA conversions.

For numbers ACTA has lost big time.

OTOH ACTA gamers want their minis, and those that they want.

Random stuff ahs put me off for a loooong time already. (Disregarding MtG cause it is cheap to let other peeps buy and then just get the right stuff).

Maybe ill do the same with Star Wars stuff. Then theres ACTA and Battletech conversions.

That Mon Cal ship is a Viscount class Star Defender, a ship from the extended universe which is intended to compete with the Super Star Destroyer.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mon_Calamari_Star_Cruiser#Viscount-class_Star_Defender

It is listed as such in the contents of the starter set:
Each Starship Battles Starter Set contains:

* 8 randomized, fully painted, plastic miniatures.
* 2 exclusive miniatures--
o Super Star Destroyer Executor
o Mon Calamari Star Defender Viscount
* Full-color game stat cards
* Fully illustrated battle map
* 20-sided die
* Rulebook
* 2 Fleet Commander cards
* Damage and Command counters

well lets be honest its going to sell like hotcakes, just look at the star wars minis and d&d minis games so far. Sure therye simply beer & pretzel games when alls said and done but they ARE notheless good for a laugh :P

Im not going to go nuts and buy loads and loads but I WILL get some :P

As to random ships, it worked for them in D&D minis and in Star Wars Minis and it worked for Pirates of the Spanish main..... the thing with random minis is that as much as I hate to admit it, it IS fun to collect the damnable things not knowing exactly what youre going to get (also you tend to actualy GET alot more ships for your money in terms of sheer numbers).

All in all I wouldn't really call it 'competition' for ACTA any more than I would call magic tha gathering competition for poker or D&D miniatures competition for Warhammer 40k etc etc

yeah, I can see me picking up a few sets, but not religiously. Be handy for Star wars minis to use in an ActA conversion. anyone have photos of the ships or a list of what's in the set?
