ACTA Shial, question from the FAQ thread

The Nial was printed with hull 3, but corrected in the FAQ to 4. Since the Shial was based on the Nial (I suspect the stats were copied/pasted then modified), should this also have hull 4?

As it is, the Shial seems rubbish compared to the Nial. It trades a point of hull and an AD of weapons, for an extra 1" movement and 6+ stealth... well the movement is a bit superfluous since 15 is quite enough for most engagements, and the stealth bonus doesn't help it in dogfights or against AF fire - only against ship weapons, which are easy to dodge anyway. As it is, it is much less of a threat to capital ships than a Nial: easier for AF to kill it, and it does less damage itself. It seems to be totally role-less, outclassed by the Nial in every regard. Hull 4 would fix it.

What bugs me about no answer to this question yet is that Matt post an answer to another question on Thu Nov 01, 2007 5:02 pm, which was just a few hours after you posted the bump.

Tell me about it... seems to happen a lot with my questions... maybe I just ask all the awkward ones

I'd not hold my breath, I suspect that they just look like standard Nials. As to the hull score, I'd suggest that it's right as it appears to trade speed and stealth for armour. Don't see any point to it over the Nial either.

It trades speed and stealth for armour and weapons. A very bad trade indeed. If it were hull 4 then it would be a reasonable trade: speed and stealth for weapons. It wouldn't be better ro worse; just different, and suited to a different role. As it is, Nial is better in every situation.

I wouldn't normally suspect something like this of being a typo without good reason. My suspicion is that the Shial was copied/pasted from the Nial stats and edited. Therefore a confirmed typo in the Nial's stats would be copied across to the Shial's.

Would be nice to get an official response.

The problem is that when going through the Rulesmasters threads, I tend to look for the ones that have _not_ been answered (we have plenty of playtesters and game experts who answer questions here).

Moral of the story: If you want me to drop in to a thread _don't_ bump! It makes it look as if you have already been answered!

Thanks Matt :)

The problem with only looking at ones with 0 replies, is that quite often other people reply with inane or unrelated posts. For example LBH's reply in this thread. He asked a question totally unrelated to the original.

Its also quite frustrating and hard to resist bumping, when the thread is 2 days old, yet other threads have gotten answers within a couple of hours!!! Eg:

I can understand that - it all depends when the forum gets checked and who by. For example, if someone asks a question about, say, Ultimate Feats, I would be hesitant to answer it myself. If there is an easy and clear cut CTA question I tend to dive right in. Sometimes we even have to take time to think about the answer!

We try not to let things drift too much and get round to everyone, but please remember there is no dedicated Rulemaster position (hell of a job if there were) at Mongoose - we all muck in as and when we can!
