acta costs

I think im starting to see one of the reasons why acta is not as big here in the states as it is over in england. thanks to the falling dollar (note, I am putting no blame on mongoose whatsoever, this is the US's fault) getting the 10 pt battle fleet I plan to run in an upcoming campaign would cost me an estimated $427.68 for the 25 ships i would need, and their respective fighters, and that is if I can find a store that will order them for me.

If you can find any of the older fleet boxes on the net or ebay, they do give better value for money, and are very useful forfilling out fleets.

That price really isn't much different from some of the other miniature games that are available. Anyway they can be found for less. Buying a fleet box is a good start (especially 1st edition fleet boxes) as the ships are discounted in the fleet boxes, some fleets more than others. Unless you really have no plans to use some of the ships in a fleet box, they really are the best bet for a good start. The current ones give anywhere from about a 30% to 45% discount on the price.

I gotta tell you, dropping a grand into ACTA has bought me 4 fleets (the majority of them painted).

Dropping a grand into Warhammer Fantasy bought me 1 army (I have done all my own painting).

Think about it...

Cheap painted ships for sale on auction sites is usually a sign a game is suffering, not a sign of its strength. I consider myself lucky to have had a number of ships from back in B5Wars days (though I have bought three fleets from Mongoose).

alright, my amazement at the cost of the minatures may have been misguided as I research other miniature games. The only other miniature game I ever played was Battletech and my group owned dozens of each mech, and at that time I was in middle school so my parents shouldered the cost of starting an army.

On the subject of fleet box's, unfortunatly I cannot get a first ed fleet box as the fleet I plan to play is new with this edition to my knowledge: The Psi Corps.

The Psi Corps is one of the most expensive fleets around. It requires lots of smaller ships and newer ships which tends to be more expensive (and less readily available in cheaper stores and sites).

I bought a civilian fleet box and converted the liner into a mothership and freighters into fighter carriers. A much cheaper option for me. If your gaming group is amenable, don't convert them, just paint them black and white.

Other fleets can be a lot less expensive - Vorlons and Shadows come with a full campaign fleet in the fleet box, Minbari and Crusade EA use a lot of bigger ships, and so require less ships to make a fleet. One of the board members is selling 4 painted fleets on ebay for around $300.

ACTA is defiently a cheap minature game, maybe Confrontation, AT43 and those are in the same class...but you can´t really compare cause u can battle in so many ways in ACTA that it is insane =)

Comparing costs to, say, Battlefleet Gothic, ACTA does okay on the high end, but suffers against the plastics and the smaller ships.

BFG Battleships run $35, while B5 Armageddon's run from $20-$60. Though it must be said, the bigger B5 ships are really BIG.

BFG Cruisers run from $7.50 in plastic (Imperial and Chaos only) to $30 in metal.
B5 Cruisers (raid and Battle) tend to hover right between $12 and $20. I think the Psi Corp Mothership is one of the more expensive at $25.

BFG Escorts and Lights run from $3 to $10.
B5 Skirmish and Patrol vary wildly, from $5 to $18. Some seem to be because of the size (Saggitarius) while others are baffling (like why the Tethys costs less than half the similarly sized Shadowcloak).

Fighters are tough to compare, becasue the basing differs. IIRC though, BFG Fighters come 5 to a stand, and run about 50 cents each, making it $2.50 a stand.
B5 fighters are $3 a stand, including a really nice basing system.

The big B5 ACTA advantage? Box Sets. Those discounts range from $53 to $84 (maybe more) if I've done my math right.
BFG has no deal whatsoever, and GW only sells direct (so retailer get very little margin or reason to sell them)

Oh, and of course, B5 ACTA ruleset now beats out stuff like BFG, Fed Commander, and Full Thrust HANDS DOWN! :-)

Today the exchange rate for the dollar to the pound is 1.95 to 1 and the exchange rate for the dollar to the euro is 1.46 to 1. The euro to pound rate is 1.34 to 1. You can draw your own conclusions as to what is best to convert to.

Since the Euro *used* to be about 1-1, like a year ago, Pound to Dollar is actually better lately. In the trend context. Thanks goodness B5 isn't made in Germany. :-) I often wonder if the Euro rise against the dollar is hurting the AT-43 and Confrontation rollouts...
