ActA at Gaelcon, thread the third

I know I'm not in this tourney, but I thought I'd put in my penny. 1.5 Hour games tend to be rushed, and I've heard a lot of players complain that they only lost because of the time constraint. Also other players, myself included. Have won 17-3/13-7 victories, but they could have been 17-3/20-0 wins if we had that extra 30 mins.

I prefer 3x 2 hour games. I'd rather have 3 full games, than 4 games which are cut off halfway due to time running out.

And yes, I have lost games before because they were 1.5 hours... even my opponents have admitted they were "saved by the bell".

I would also support the 3 x 2 hour games on the Saturday.

Can we email our fleet lists prior to the tourney for approval and also, I have heard that Armageddon is more than likely going to be late; can we therefore have a ruling as to whether Armageddon will be in or out,

Many thanks

Digger.

P.S. ThePirv knows an awful lot about being thrashed!

Assuming Armageddeon is out no later than the start of October, we'll be using the fleet lists and rules in it. Otherwise it'll be the tourney pack. emailing or PMing fleet lists for pre-approval is no problem.

In general we like something to be out at least a month before a tournament, to give people time to get used to whatever rules changes there might be. Unless Armageddon is due out within the next couple of weeks, its a fair bet we would not use it.

I'm in favour of pre-approving lists, as its means less for me to do on the day.

Since 3 x 2 seems to be the favoured format, I think we can go with that.*

Right then, I have ordered the book to hopefully be delivered before the Tourney (fat chance!!) so can we have a definitive answer from the Gaelcon guys which rule set is to be used, the Tourney Pack rules of the Armageddon rules, :)

Cheers

We generally like for a rulebook (update / whatever) to be out for a month or more before a tournament, so people have the chance to get used to rules changes and so forth.

I'll give Lorcan the final word on it, but my gut feeling is we've gone past the deadline, and to keep things fair we should use the existing tournament pack.

Well it's meant to be released on Friday, which is close enough to a month that I'd allow it. If it's delayed any further, we'll stick to the tourney pack.

Well my LGS has yet to get Armageddeon in, so I'm leaning towards just using the tourney pack for the con.

That makes sense to me, seeing as there's less than 3 weeks to the tournament, although participants really need a definitive ruling asap, so they have time to get things ready.

Looking forward to it all the same, Lorcan - it'll be great to have a drink or 6 with you Dublin guys!

What's to stop you going with SFOS?

As the tourney is 5 points raid, we couldn't use Armageddon ships anyway!

Either way though, you guys are the organisers, so a definitive it's SFOS or Tourney Pack would be appreciated.

As Tenacious B - I am looking forward to meeting you guys and having a drink or 6!

The Tourney pack superceded SFOS for tournament games, and I was hoping to use the new stealth and fighter rules from Armageddeon more then the new ship stats.

OK - So it's the Tourney Pack then - No changing things when my Armageddon book arrives tomorrow (Hah! Not as long as my arse points south)

From what I've played, the new Armageddon rules are a great improvement over the old tourney. But of course it's whatever you're comfortable running, you need to be familiar with the rules yourselves to settle any possible rules disputes!

If you go with the old tourney rules, can I recommend the usual modifications: Shadow Hunter is hull 5 not 6 but gets free fighters, and Sagittarius is Raid level.

I'd also recommend modifying the hyperspace rules, since the old tourney pack pretty much arbitrarily gives one player an advantage. Either both players can keep up to 2 FAP's in hyperspace, or nobody gets any hyperspace. Both those options are much fairer IMO than rolling a D6 for who gets a hyperspace advantage.
