2300 Rocinante project

This is a different case, in that ownership means Mongoose can put out whatever they want, however, but they cannot erase the primary canon. There is a social contract between them and the fans. Colin has declared that his universe is not the prime universe. Cool, but that simply means he is writing an alternative, non-canonical variant setting.
Tell that to Disney, Tell that to Paramount, Tell that to Marc who says TNE and MegaTraveller is Canon.
A very libertarian argument, that the owner should be allowed to do whatever they want with their property. Yet, we do regulate things in most of the world. Just because you own a car doesn't mean you can drive it without a licence, and you have to follow the established rules of the road for example.
The license to drive a car does not refer to ownership of the car its referencing to the ownership of the road. Did you know that the police can’t give you a ticket for actions on a private road? They have no jurisdiction. The rules of the road refer to the road not the vehicle I can drive a car without a license all I want on my own property. Sorry you have a bad argument with this one.

What is buggy about T2300 once the task system has been replaced?
2300AD has some serious issues thanks to changes made from T2300
I see no problem with a cleaned up version of the current system something like the 2022 books (yes I know 2300 is supposed to be that but it fails at it). My biggest thing is they need to separate the lines cleaner, give 2300 its own CRB. AEH cleaned up and expanded (to many hidden rules and it needs expanding on) a vehicle/robot source book that uses the Traveller books of the same subject (I just don’t think a whole new set of books for these is needed) we got somewhat that in vehicles of the frontier so expanding it and updating it would do the job. I don’t think we need to resurrect an old system that has its own set of flaws we would be better off fixing the existing one.

In a 2300 sense we have several 'facts of life'...
- The ship killer is the missile drone. Every nation has a type but the current standard is the Ritage II and SIM-14. Most naval vessels can either carry these or can be adapted to do so.
- Ships are not limited by the speed of their stutterwarp drives, they're limited by the discharge time for those drives. The average discharge time for a task force is as big a strategic factor as how much fuel the group is carrying. This should be clearly listed on the ship sheet.
- Fuel, supplies, and gravity are also major factors in a ship's on station endurance. A ship without gravity loses a large percentage of its efficiency if it's crew spends half their awake time on treadmills trying to keep their bone density from turning geriatric. Therefore, ships without a gravity have much less on-station time than those with gravity.
I basically I can agree is concept, though I’m not sure why it’s necessary to make things more complicated for a game. Not all combat drones are missile/drone in fact most are not, most are Fighter/Drone.

When I started this thread I thought it would be a fun way to get to know the 2300 AEH, and it was at first we talked about tonnage and armor as well as other things. Then the thread got hijack by people trying to push earlier edition rule, claiming that you don’t own a IP you buy that it’s public domain of some sort and pushing their hatred for this edition of 2300. So I’m asking you please if you don’t want to discuss converting the ship to current mongoose 2300 rules just leave the thread. I don’t care how thing were done in earlier editions I don’t care about your opinion on Megatraveller or TNE and I certainly don’t care for some social contract ideology about the rights a IP holder has over their IP.

Just please be polite and leave the thread.

Not according to Mongoose 2300 which is what we are talking about.

Really? Yet all the major warships have large missile complements, and the Kennedy writeup (incidently, largely cribbed from a piece I wrote) outright states missiles are the dominant factor in combat.

Again get back on topic we are not talking about previous edition we are talking about mongoose 2300 which specifically states that these drone are remotely controlled. And it’s a game not a science paper.

It's supposedly a hard sci-fi game. Whilst the players and directors should have to worry about it too much, the designers should. They should make the rules as realistic as possible without losing playability. If done write, the limitations of hard SF should make for good challenges and plot points.

Missiles are indeed remotely piloted. This creates interesting mechanics that were never fully explored. LWS (ISTR) once indicated they'd adopted a house rule that missiles could only be controlled 4 hexes away to account for the delay. Robotic, self-targetting weapons existed (such as the Sentinel) but they had a -3 to hit penalty. Thus as long as the weapon can be guided onto target semi-actively, it can still attack at very long range.

Read the ECM rule vs Remotely controlled vehicles.

Yes. They impose a -2 penalty to active detection and a +4 bonus to passive detection.

There is the unrealistic jamming rule. Communications are tight-beam lasers and masers, and the jammer has no capability to match the frequency.

I will point out that the jamming rule uses the task system wrongly. An opposed check does not produce one effect, but both parties roll separately and get an effect level. Highest level wins (see MgT 2nd ed pg 59). It is perhaps not surprising that Colin doesn't know how the Mongoose Traveller rules system works.

Thus, I have to interpret the rule, and it would be something like:

Jamming, electronics (communications+EDU, 1d6 mins) check at difficult (10+) level. Success is a -1 to hit penalty (-2 on exceptional success)
Resist jamming, electronics (communications + EDU, instant) at routine (6+) level. +2 if comms encrypted (i.e. all comms) and +4 if ECCM available. Success is +1 to hit (+2 if exceptional).

Read page 135 AEH PDF drones are a thing.

Yes, and they are useless.

They have a range of <100 km. One range band is 150,000 km. A missile at warp 3 is travelling 3,600 km/s. A point defense drone has to intercept the missile and is in range for around 1-5 milliseconds depending on the intercept geometry. Similarly, point defences have ranges that equate to the final millseconds of an attack. Unlike an intercepting missile, a target is by definition in the centre of the sphere and for an "impacting" weapon at warp 3, the PD has about 20 milliseconds to engage it. Of course, a bomb-pumped nuke has the same or more range (as written), and so the intercept happens in a small band at the edge of the range.

Lasers have a maximum focal range dependent on the frequency and diameter of the focal array (or individual FA elements). At twice the focal range, the laser is as broad as the FA. Any attacker, knowing the capability of the defending lasers, can simply stay 10% further than the maximum focal range with no danger of any damage.

This also means focusing on a target is critical. If you focus at 100 km, but the target is at 80 km, then the beam is 20% of the FA diameter and so broad as to be ineffective.

except not T2300, thats the original very buggy GDW game.... I think they actually should actually cut and paster Mgt2 task system into 2300 honestly! and forget what they currently have, it sounds pretty wonky

The task system is based on the to hit roll in CT (8+ on 2d6) with difficulty bands added (which are different to the DGP difficulty levels). You get to add a skill and an attribute. Success and failure come in various levels, with beating or missing the roll by 6 or more being exceptional success/failure. Honestly, it's a perfectly fine system that's a bit "1980's" but works well enough.

2nd edition added a boon/bane system which is basically redundant. If in advantaged or disadvantaged circumstances roll 3d6 instead of 2d6 and discarded the lowest or highest dice. It would be easier to simply move the difficulty level.

You can speed/up/ slow down for a +/- 2 modifier per level. This could easily have been folded into the main roll with marginal failures meaning it is successful but takes longer etc.

Opposed checks have both sides rolling a task, and the winner is however beat the check by the most. More traditional would be a single roll weighted by circumstances.

Finally there are task chains, in which multiple, sequential tasks give bonuses/ penalties to the next. These rules don't seem to work very well, and encourage needless extra dice rolling.

Discharge is (or was) 40 h in all cases. Colin added (nonsensical) discharge vanes, but missiles don't have their own vanes and so all task forces take 40 hours to discharge.

Where discharge happens is an interesting question. As originally written, discharge occurred spontaneously in the STL zone, with no need to visit a planet. This was revised in 1988 to require visiting a planet. I advise reading this.

Mongoose uses the 1988 revision, but this creates two major problems:

1. The Bayern mission is impossible. At some point you will hit a barren system, and in the Pleiades it is guaranteed. Bayern only works under 1st edition rules.
2. Arcturus is planetless and transiting requires disposable drives. No contact with the Kafers is possible under the 1988 rules.

Chicken and egg.

Ship designations form expectations of what they are supposedly capable of.

Then, you have mission creep, six hundred tonne torpedo boat destroyers evolve a century later into sixteen kilotonne destroyers.

The capital ship of the first half of the Victorian Age, transformed from a four gun deck first class ship of the line, to a single gun deck, if ironclad, frigate.

Bryn this is not your game and I’m tired of your gatekeeping because it doesn’t run like you want it to. I’ve been nice and ask you to dropped it but instead You keep telling people how the game should be. I don’t care what you want to do in your game I started this post for a reason and you have highjack it for your bitching because the game is different from what you want. You’re one of the reasons that the game is doing so poorly because I’ve seen your type at conventions. I don’t ever want you to replay to any of my post I happen to like Mongooses 2300 it has problems but it’s a living game unlike other editions and the problems can be fixed. If you want the game to be done your way than buy the IP from mongoose until then let people enjoy the game.
