So given that environment, yeah, I've had enough and I don't see why I should waste any more of my time here.

That's your choice, of course.

Tell ya what. I really don't have anything against you at all. If there's any hatchet to be buried, then let's bury it.

What do you say we just let bygones be bygones? Let's forget about anything that's happened in earlier posts and get back to discussing Traveller like adults?

No snarky comments...

Are you game for that?

I'm really getting sick of this game's community. It seems that I can't ask simple questions without being accused of starting fights or without people insulting me or blaming me for all the strife on discussion boards. And of course everyone else is perfectly saintly and not to blame for anything. It's freaking ridiculous.

I give up. Good luck with Traveller, Mongoose. You're going to need it.
mmm....

Now THAT is a continuous contradiction...

Oh by the way. Someone having lots of tweaks for CT and then say then run 'pure rules as written' without stating they dropped all their tweaks is asking for a little 'friendly' harassment.

BACK ON TOPIC
I WILL be buying MGT, everything they've announced to date. I'm hoping they use EDG's starsystem/worldgen mechanics (he knows what he's doing there) but if they don't it won't keep me from not buying it.

Now the cover on MGT's Spinward Marches might just keep the book off my shelf... MIGHT.

Just curious, but what didn't you like about it? I liked the style myself, much better then 1970's toons in leotards with Trek-style ray guns. Some of the older goofy stuff was always a turn-off for me. I've always liked the more realistic, "darker" stuff myself. I know it's not classic traveller artwork, but it's an improvement IMHO.

[DISCLAIMER] not a snipe at your opinion whatsoever, this is just my opinion and curious of what you didn't like. [END-DISCLAIMER] Harsh times around here.

I don't like it either. It's a nice piece for a different game, but it's not Traveller. Traveller should have a more realistic look. The cover of that book looks more to me like something for Star Wars or a gothic sci-fi action game.

Traveller art can still look "cool", but it needs to be much more realistic looking. Take a look at the characters. They're more comic-book-like rather than realistic.

There is a "cat-man", "bird-man", and a "wolf-man" in the picture, might be hard to make them look realistic and not toonish. :)

Well Sticking on topic, I have already answered that I was going to buy the new Traveller, after reviewing the old T20 Forums and others, I just reaffirmed my decision. Why do you ask, well just reading the old posts reminded be of how confusing it was discussing Traveller with all the different editions and variants floating around. I hope this system will be unifying to some degree.

I know we are adding two more, MogT and T5 to the mix, but lets face it would be kind of nice to get a complete system in a store for purchase. I love GURPS Traveller, for the source books, there some of the best written stuff there is, I have most of them, but having to get GURP Rules, Vehicles and I really don’t what else was needed to play, so I gave up. The game system seemed, at least then as, esoteric, and superfluous.

After browsing the old posts, I realize that all posts need to start with the intro,

Hi, my name is Odo, and I’m a Travellerholic, I have CT, MT, TNE, T4, GT, and soon MogT. I have the following resources to draw upon, please see list in Bio for complete inventory of game collection, including DGP and all Challenge Magazines in the following discussion:

Maybe I need to do a signature graphic.

The Artwork on the cover of MogT Spin ward marches looked, ok to me, a least there was no Jedi or Mech in it.

Check out some of the art in the old DGP stuff. There are some B&W drawings of Vargr that will make you say, "Yeah, I can now believe those aliens are real."

It can be done. Just depends on the artist.

It has to be said, as gaming 'communities' go, the one for Traveller (generally) is a particular spiky one, with long standing feuds that appear to have gone on for years. The new edition by Mongoose is merely highlighting them, currently.

There is something about the written word that unleashes the not so gentle angels of our heart. Maybe, it’s nature of the written words relative permanency, the personal time, or even the mental effort, or that we hold our selves up to the standards of Shakespeare, Einstein, or Steven King, but I think it has to do with the simple failure to communicate. We all want to be understood, even liked for our substantive thoughts and opinions, no more so than on a message board where opinion is king. We want to convert everyone to our view, or be toughly convinced that our view is incorrect. Yes there is a lot of ego involved, maybe even mental illness, but that’s what it boils down to, we all want to be influential. One of my favorite lines from a Harry Potter book was something to the effect “that if you are going to wait around for universal popularity, you are going to have a very long wait.”

So, on that note, I suggest we all remember that this Traveller is a game, with arbitrary and even contrary rules, and with every game the goal is fun. It is not means of I.Q. justification and intellectual domination. Don’t take things personally; the people who agree with you are, generally, not the ones responding, only the ones with the strongest opinion against your point of view.

I've just never cared for any pictures on the cover of my Traveller books (although the format for GURPS lent itself well to having pictures on the covers and they are good pics. Got all those books except "First In").

The entire layout, pic, fonts, etc just don't thrill me. It feels like some totally different game. Now the covers for core book, High Guard, etc... those are true CT and I love them. I'd like to see MGP stick with that format for all the MGT books.

And I had no problem with your question. It's normal to say "why don't you like it" when someone makes that claim (or why do you like it).

I totally disagree. Obviously.

I've just pre-ordered MongT; the exchange rates between my local currency (NIS - New Israeli Shekels) and US$ were too favorable for me to miss such an opportunity :)

I pre-ordered my copies a couple of days ago through Amazon (the Australian dollar looks much better against the US$ than Stirling at the moment.

I'd really like to be able to support local game stores, but Adelaide has pretty slim pickings in that department - the best couple of stores have either closed their doors or changed hands. The ones that are left can look after you if you play D20, VtM, MtA or WoD, but if you want something more "exotic" you're screwed.

I preordered mine through an online game store that I have dealt with in the past. I have played other versions of Traveller and the only 2 that I did not care for were Megatraveller and TNE. I have and enjoy the Traveller d20 system (it is the only decent d20 scifi system out there and I have tried almost all of them.)

Only if I see a review stating that the published version is dramatically different from the playtest version. Otherwise, I already have two versions of Traveller that I don't feel are worth the paper they're printed on and don't really need another.

If I do read a review informing me that all the needlessly complicated rules have been excised and it's been made into something closer to CT or MT, of course, I'll be all over it.

Hmm... judging by the combat preview, a lot of stuff has actually been changed for the better. I guess I may get it yet after all.

I've changed my mind and decided to go for it. The scout ship despite the error looked good to me. I really like that they gave the ship a small amount of armor and the probes.

Mike

I will buy it, when it eventually comes out, from my FLGS if they stock it or somewhere else later if they don't. However, I would hope it doesn't take too much longer to get to the shops...
