Why do we Travel?

It is that time of year again where we ponder the core of our delusion. Why do we Travel? Pull up roots and wander the stars?

It's no delusion.

It's a big universe out there. It's not only queerer than we imagine - it's queerer than we can imagine. But there's nowt so queer as folk, either, so in honour of those fine folks back in 20th Century Earth who came up with such aphorisms, I just paint the name "JBS Haldane" on my ship, stock my cargo bay with luxuries such as Lancashire hotpot and black puddings, and head off to the stars to meet some of those people.

But there's always someone new and strange to meet, in the next star system across. And the next. And the next ...

some people have a wandering spirit, the need to be somewhere else and a restlessness to see whats over the next hill...

besides i am in awe of the universe and take comfort in how absolutly insignificant my actions are on the larger stage. so if i can turn a small profit, pitch my ship towards the nearest star and bask in its universal magnificance then i can be happy

Or would that be over the next planet?

What's a fella (or gal) supposed to do? Can't just sit, hope things get better for you. You've got to go out there and grab life by the balls and squeeze real hard, see? Hard to do sitting dirtside. Stars are the place, things can happen, can't happen at home playing in the mud. Not that you won't do that too, see, but that ain't the point. Ain't the point at all.

"I must not be a commuter. Commuting is the mind killer. Holding down a nine-to-five is the little death that brings utter obliteration."

Don't forget the better life.

Use the expansions and travels across North American as an example. Many people traveled to find better lands to farm, more freedoms from what they did not like of government or their neighbors. Or they had no choice.

That might be some of the reasons people take to the stars.

One of my standard answers is, "Have you met my Ex-wife?"

Sounds like the reason I give for moving 400 miles south of Glasgow to Bristol.

There is a reason I moved, that reason is my mother! :lol:

"I cannot rest from travel: I will drink
Life to the lees: all times I have enjoyed
Greatly, have suffered greatly, both with those
That loved me, and alone; on shore, and when
Through scudding drifts the rainy Hyades
Vexed the dim sea: I am become a name;
For always roaming with a hungry heart
Much have I seen and known; cities of men
And manners, climates, councils, governments,
Myself not least, but honoured of them all;
And drunk delight of battle with my peers;
Far on the ringing plains of windy Troy.
I am a part of all that I have met.

- Alfred Lord Tennyson, "Ulysses"

Storming quote!
I was grasping for something with an SF link..how about

"I'll miss the sea, but a person needs new experiences. They jar something deep inside, allowing him to grow. Without change something sleeps inside us, and seldom awakens. The sleeper must awaken. "
