Here are some WIP pics of my Federation BC. I was finally able to settle on a paint scheme I'm happy with and hope to post some finished pics soon. Constructive criticism welcome.

I like the use of the blue as an accent. Brightens up the look of the ship.

What techniques and colours are you using for the painting?

Thanks. I'm using P3's 'Signar Blue Highlight' which also gives the ship some much needed colour.

All colours are GW's, both old and new, unless otherwise mentioned.

Started out with grey primer, followed by a basecoat of 'Astronomican Grey' (sadly now discontinued). I put a black wash over everything then coated with 'Fortress Grey', drybrushed on the saucer. A further drybrush of the new 'Longbeard Grey' gave it the varied white/grey I was looking. I'm contemplating a very light white drybrush over that, but I haven't decided yet. The bands on the nacelles are P3's 'Ironhill Grey', the sensor dish is 'Brazen Brass', the front of the nacelles are 'Shining Gold' (a very old paint) with a red wash, while the back of the nacelles will be 'Mithril Silver' with a blue wash. Did I forget anything?

Oh yes, the base sticker is courtesy of Billclo :)

Cool. After looking at the miniatures I decided not to go the drybrushing route on the feds as there were too many wierd artifacts of the prototyping process present. Striations and rings and the like that would start to show up and I wanted a really clean look to the feds.

I pondered on using a black wash - good old badab black but went for a grey wash instead. The new Lamian Medium is really good for making colour washes that dry where you put them! I recomend giving it a go for custom washes and glazes.
I actually painted the wash into the crevices rather then over the whole thing. MUCH slower but keeps it from going too dark.

If you're thinking of a further white drybrush try aiming it at the edges of the saucer, the bridge bubble, along the tops of the nacells and the hull only. This can help to accentuate the shape of the curves.

Try Celestra grey as a replacement for astonomican. Its not exactly the same but it is very very close and still covers well.

I've been looking at different ways to base up my ships that will be useful for playing with.

The stickers that people have been using look really cool but I'm a little impatient to do those up for myself!

I also try to make bases blend into the surface I'm playing on as best as possible.

I decided to go for simple lines on the bottom of the bases for fire arcs and directions.

I've also given a whirl to putting frigates onto smaller bases.

These allow small ships to bunch up to a similar look to the bigger ones.

Finally I've mounted the shuttles onto small stands to give them some height but not so big that they can't fit under the other ships.

Having read through the fighter rules for noble armada I noticed that fighters can fly onto the bases of bigger ships to act as protection. This isn't in the SF rules yet but I thought I'd prepare anyway!

So there we are. All together.

What does everyone think? Let me know!

Good job on the paintwork!

I agree the little frigates can go onto small bases - in fact, I'm surprised they're not supplied with small bases. Other flavours of ACTA have supplied small ships with small bases, which is why the small bases exist in the first place. :) The only question is whether the ship is still stable on the smaller base, which you'll soon find out, but they look as though they should be fine - especially if you use shorter stems too.

Feeling the need for something different from the standard federation, and from the standard mirror universe, I have decided to start painting my federation ships as.. the United Constellation Empire. You may notice the I.C.F Imperial Constellation Fleet.

My first ship, the I.C.F. Cuba

I like the scheme. Good take on the 'aztecing' of the more modern trek ships but with a unique spin with the other shapes too.

Problem always come down to trying to get sharp straight lines on the lettering. Mainly why I try not to freehand stuff!
I've looked into DIY transfers in the past but my PC skills arn't up to creating all of the shapes in the right scale.

Look forward to seeing the rest of the fleet done up!

Geoff

Yeah, I like the idea that some of the hull plates are different color from the rest, so tried to get that represented with some darker and lighter patches on the mini.

The files are to large for em to upload...
