What play aids are people using?

Looks good, but one quick note; according to the latest errata file, the Lumbering Trait no longer exists. (Also, some of the ship stats, like those for the D7, have been adjusted somewhat.)

I forgot about the "Lumbering" trait. I'll remove that, thanks.

I do have a question about the ships and errata...I noticed that they have new reference cards in the errata, but they also list some of the ship changes. For example, they list the armoured trait for the War Eagle, but show 5 different Romulan ships below. Is it because those were changed before, and the War Eagle change is just the most recent change?

I think it was more that the ships wiith stat line errata might have been easier to fix that way, whereas the others needed to have their actual entries re-furbished to work properly. (This would be most noticeable with the adjustments to the phaser suites of the C8 and K9R.)

Rather than poker chips or glass beads, I've got a set of PennyGems:

You just need to whip up a chart that says (basically) X gem = X Effect/Order/Whatever. There are eight colors in a set (with a ninth color available, it looks like), and they're all double-sided (blank on the back), so you can use (say) the Red ones as Phasers and flip them over once they've fired.

Very interesting.

The ad found here: http://www.etsy.com/listing/100600820/pennygems-full-spectrum-set-320-tokens?ref=v1_other_1 says "The "Full Spectrum" set includes enough labels to create 320 PennyGems: forty each in eight different colors" but that's not quite right. Each color is split half the blank color and half has a shape, so its 20 in 16 different looks. For a fleet box you would have to ignore the shapes on the PennyGems and just look at the color.

When he says "40 each in 8 colors," he means that there are two stickers per Gem, so the "Full Spectrum" set includes 640 stickers. Usually, you put the blank on one side and the shape on the other.

As I said: If my reference says Phasers are red, then the red teardrop is phasers which haven't fired - once they've fired, I flip them to the blank side so I know that they've been resolved.

Or I can use red (blank) and red (teardrop) for different orders, and remove them from the board once they're resolved (if they're something that resolves and then goes away, like weapons fire).

Here are some of my reference sheets that I made to use with the game. I've actually made a whole set for the Federation, Klingon, Romulan, Kziniti, and Gorn. (8.5" x 5.5")

if anyone would like a set of my reference sheets, just drop me a message with your email address. ive finally finalized them, and have full sets for the federation, klingons, romulans, kzinti, gorn, and even the tholians and Orion. I had help getting them proofread from a fellow player I met, and he should know who he is. if you'd like to be mentioned, feel free to reply:)

All I ask is that if you use them, please let me know if there's any errors or any other ways to improve them.

I hope it's ok to share these since I know Mongoose is coming out with their own set. if this is a no-no, I won't pass these out.

these are very cool. it'd be nice if we could customize the images on them.

I came up with a play aid that I'm going to be using in my next game to see how it works out.

It was in response to an issue that cropped up while using Scoutdad's special action tokens; namely that the token covered up the firing arcs on the base and more importantly, the ship ID number written on the back of the base sticker.

I came up with the idea of using some rubber fuel line (3/16ths inside diameter, 3/8ths outside diameter) to hold up the token far enough away from the base so that the ship ID is visible, as are the firing arcs. It's about 1/2" tall. I used some acetone to wipe off the white markings on the hose.

You can see the difference with and without the spacer:

So, I got informed my reference cards weren't accessible unless you were registered on a forum I post at, so I've uploaded them to my own space, and you can actually download them now! Silly me. :P

I love your reference cards I wondered why there was no strike cruiser, or the fast cruiser but then noticed you made them using the squad boxes.

I love your reference cards and had them downloaded on my laptop for Gencon.

Matt didn't tell me what our demo fleets were going to be until I got to the booth on Thursday - Turned out they were Kizinti and Federation. So I ended up hastily writing everything down on paper then that night I went to print off the pages from your reference cards, only to nearly cry when I discovered only Feds and Klingons were in it.

I ended up spending three hours in my hotel room recreating your format in Excel so I could have the Feds and the Kizinti look the same. (which was fun having do to after getting dinner and the 1 hr bus/shuttle ride back to my hotel).

I really appreciate the format you used, it game me something to just recreate instead of having the added burden of figuring out a layout.

Sweet, glad people are liking them. I'll see if I can get the rest of the Feds and Klingons, plus the Romulans, Gorn, and Kzinti added by the end of the year. I'm also trying to figure out how to export the format into Word for Nerroth to make his own cards for all the experimental stuff he posts (I use InDesign and Photoshop for the cards right now).

Updated the cards so the organization is more clear, plus expanded it for additional sections for all the ships I haven't done yet. They just have placeholders right now. Also added version and a complete/to-do section at the bottom of the table of contents.

Actual cards will be forthcoming as I try to find the time. :P

Updated my cards again! The Federation fleet list is now fully finished (At least until the Gettysburg and Mars come out :P). I'll see if I can't start knocking out Romulans now. You can find the link at my blog: http://allerka.blogspot.com/2012/11/acta-my-federation-fleet.html

Thanks for the reference cards, Allerka, they will definitely be useful!

If I was to make a minor suggestion, you might consider switching around the shields & hull boxes on your cards if only for a more logical flow. Only a suggestion however, your cards are quite useful as-is.

Updated my cards! I've added the Federation and Klingon ships from Fleet Update #1, and the entire Romulan fleet is on track to be done this weekend. I'll see how much of the Gorn and Kzinti fleets I can get done, too.

You can download them directly from here.

As always, please let me know if you see any errors, typos, formatting mistakes, etc.

Thanks for the updates!

A quick glance notes several duplicate entries for Klingon ships and you've misspelled the Sparrowhawk.

Get a bunch of different sided dice (d8, d10, d12, d20) for randomly determining "Lose one random trait" or "Random weapon cannot fire". Whenever you have one of these on the crit chart, count up the number of available traits or weapon systems and select and roll the appropriate dice. Then just count traits left to right or weapons top to bottom to determine which is affected. Treat any die rolls that are out of range as a "Re-roll".

The Klingon section is basically the fleet box. So you can print that section off with the fleet box and have all the cards you need.

The Federation and Romulans, since they have both squad boxes and reinforcements, were done to cover both those boxes and then the remainder of their fleet as extras. The Klingons, Gorn, and Kzinti, since they don't have both of those boxes, had their sections based on the fleet boxes instead.

I'll check on the Sparrowhawk. ;)
