What Kind of Books are You Interested In?

Cosmic Mongoose
Good day

What kind of books are you interested in? I asked this in the "State of Legend" thread, but it really deserves its own thread. I released to Legend products to date Book of Beasts: Legendary Monsters 1 and Legendary Factions: Common Factions 1. Now that we have a pair of editors and a larger art budget, we are interested in doing more Legend products but we are still not sure what you, Legend gamers, would like to see.

So we are putting it to you. What kinds of products would you like to see? Please share with us what you would like.

Thank you for your time,

Dale C. McCoy, Jr

Magic of Legend: Runes

Perhaps have an offshoot postapocalyptic book using examples from film and books perhaps throwing in examples of legend like what was the reaction following the eruption of Vesuvius?

How long was it before anyone ventured there to find out what had happened?

Then there was that reputed eruption near Crete that some claim was the basis for the legend of Atlantis... how would you handle a book dealing with the prelude before a major calamity or better yet how would you deal with a major trade power based on whats known from legend?

Trading Powers of Legend?

Ever thought of producing a world map so we can compare the world of around 1000BC to say 1000 AD?

Alternate fantasy genres - time travel, dimension hopping, Alternative Universe (where some historical conflict turned out differently, e.g. a timeline where Atlantis never fell - and it turned out to be the Minoans, or perhaps one where the Vikings won the Battle of Stanford Bridge and conquered all of Britain - or even one where the Romans never invaded Britain, allowing the island to develop past the Iron Age into a sophisticated civilisation the envy of a dying Roman Empire), or maybe some sort of steampunk, or perhaps even a setting like PJF's Riverworld where every genre can meet - pirates, Vikings, samurai, gladiators, cowboys, 1930s socialites who dress up as six foot bats and fight crime at night, mutants with glowing eyes who can see through walls ...

We haven't got time in our schedule to do it here at Mongoose, but I would _love_ to see a complete epic camapign, along the lines of Drow War and Secrets of the Ancients...

Oh steampunk meets the second world war?

Or a Sanctuary style setting based in the Victorian era...

Sherlock Holmes, or the Extraordinary League of Gentlemen style adventure except provides generic types of adventurers of the era that players can use as inspiration for their own characters in that period...

Nobody said anything about explorers of legend have they?

What did happen to the Croatans?

I have to admit, I was not expecting such an eclectic range of desires. But so far adventures/campaigns sounds like the prevailing idea.

Honestly, I’d say put out books that you the writers are interested in. I don’t need another take on "the Celts" or the "Aztecs" by writers who aren’t deeply knowledgeable and passionate about those historical peoples. However, if you’re someone who knows the Táin Bó Cúalnge inside out, then by all means, publish away! Write about what you’re passionate about, and that passion will translate to the readers.

Adventures? Yes! I’d like to see well-tested intro adventures, along the lines of B2 - sandboxy with lots of NPCs statted up and lots of pregens. Then I’d like to see some more AP like products that can cater to more powerful PCs as well. Honestly, I’d probably get out of the splat/supplement thinking and put together some really good adventures.

New Fantasy made-up Settings? Nah. There are a quadzillion settings out there, but hell, don’t most of us just make up our own anyway?

That sums up my feelings on yet another setting.

I bought most of the Harn stuff, which is a quasi-England setting. That is the place I will use to run a campaign, with a bit more fantasy (i.e., the Chelni horse tribes are centaurs) and touches of Glorantha thrown in (I got these RQ troll, broo, and dragonewt miniatures to use somehow :D .. hmm, dragonewts are the descendants of the Earthmasters, ala Chirpers and the Ancients from Traveller .. hmmm ).

What I could use is write-ups of the Harn dieties (not that I like some of them much, but they'll do) in RQ cult formats.

I think I'd love to write something like that.

I mean, I have Blood Path currently in layout for Legend, I hope, and I'm keeping my fingers crossed on my Traveller fan psion supplement which is in somebody's hands right now (and I hope it's not too big a book for said third party).

I'm currently writing some fan fiction based on The Incredibles, and aim to follow it up with the third neuro story and the second Paleborn story after Paleborn: Inheritance - the idea of writing a Legend epic along the lines of Secrets of The Ancients does appeal to me.

Heh, heh! When I first saw the thread, I wondered if you realised what kinds of things would appear.

Yes, most people want adventures that they can use in their own campaigns.

Settings are good, but writing a setting involves a lot of time and effort, and then not many people tend to buy setting books as not everyone will be interested in the particular setting.

I prefer adventures to be in setting packs, so they are fairly heavily tied to the setting, but I also prefer detailed and well-supported settings, so the two really go hand in hand.

Generic adventures would be useful, as they can easily be adapted to specific settings and can be run as one-offs.

Cult Books are useful for particular settings, or can be used as standalone cults in multiple settings. They are useful as lists of spells as well.

Spell Books are also useful, but I like my Legend magic to be setting-specific, or at least context-specific. So, a list of spells wouldn't interest me that much, but a list of spells put into context would be more useful for me.

Adventures!!!

I love generic adventures. They can be tied to a place which can be detailed with a host of NPC's, eg Hommlet, or not. They save time poor GM's a crap load of work. That said, they need to have strong plots with a few 'what if's' thrown in and a good mix of, and I hate to use D&D-isms but sometimes they can't be avoided, encounter types; combat, investigation, problem/puzzle solving, intrigue and so on.

I think most GM's and players of Legend would rather stay away from 'Dungeon Crawls' unless such labyrinths were tied to a larger adventure as described above, but I maybe wrong in this regard.

I agree about the Adventures request.
But I don't want a big book of a long sprawling adventure I want a book of mini adventures.

There used to be loads of books like that in the 80s and 90s, they were great fun and really handy for that one off game or side quest you want to put into a campaign.

I quite like the flexibility of a selection of scenarios where there are enough threads to link them if the GM fancies a long campaign tailored to his group and his own style of GMing.
(No surprise given my recent writing projects)

Some long 'railroading',linear campaigns can feel frustrating for players and everything has the potential to become totally bolloxed through poor decision making or bad luck.

What I would need most are encounter situations, descriptions of
preferably generic locations, the people who can usually be met
there and a few ideas about interesting events or adventure possi-
bilities there. While I prefer to write the major adventures for my
campaigns myself in order to fit them into the specific setting and
campaign, it would help a lot to have some small generic encoun-
ters ready to add a bit more colour to the less important parts of
the campaign, like for example overland travel and such.

You mean like some sort of book with several quests in it? Maybe with a lightly unifying theme and background that means they could be played as a campaign or as standalones or adapted into an ongoing campaign.

What a neat idea 8)

An NPC book of pregenerated legend characters. like lots of them and with a large variety of types with a little background as well.
Engine publishing have a book called, Masks 1001 NPC's. The only thing you have to do is the game specific stuff, i.e. statistics.
