Returning to my specific example of the Darrian Maghiz, I thought of a more plausible story. At the time of the Star Trigger flare event, the Darrian economy, society, and military all revolved around the homeworld. The flare devastated the homeworld, and without it the rest of the Darrian worlds fell into economic collapse. The loss of the homeworld's political leadership left a leadership vacuum that -- in spite of Darrians' usual aversion to violence -- led to a civil war among other Darrian worlds.
When canon conflicts with plausible science, it's reasonable to say that canon is what it says in most editions of Library Data, and that it stands there because the inconsistency has not been resolved.
