Update - Step by step painting process now shown here:

As my first attempt at detailing a paint process I have been working on a Vorlon Heavy Cruiser over the weekend. (First time I have painted a Vorlon).

I have a series of photos of the painting process which I will add to the painting guide thread probably tomorrow. (Work is far too busy today, sorry). I also, on consideration need to change a few minor details on the final paint tonight. Here is a taster however.

To quote my missus when she saw the ship - "Don't tell me that this was that pretty little yellow spaceship I saw earlier, you've ruined it".

It is a nice looking ship. It looks a little bit dirty on first glance, but on closer inspection the mottle effect is very subtle.

Agree Greg - She was very much a first experiment. I will be adding a few points on my painting write up versus what I will do next time.

When I looked at my B5 dvd's the Vorlon Mottling is very subtle in some places dots in others smudges as if the dots run together, I have never seen that achieved in any CTA model yet. In close up the technique I used to create the mottling has turned out to do exactly what I aimed for.

I underestimated however the overall darkening effect that the mottling would do, next time I will go for a lighter shade of "shadow" and possibly a lighter series of highlights during the preparation stage.

Slightly accidental. I had planned to try out Wererougue's technique, (from forum history), using a wetted drybrush, (or other suitable oxymoron) to flick paint/ink on to the mini. I tried this and I was crap at it. The effect was nothing like what I was aiming for. So I decided to try the machine gun approach.

Using a toothbrush and heavily watered down black ink, load the brush and remove all excess ink until the brush is almost dry then a couple of inches from the model run your thumb through the bristles which results in a fine random spray of ink. Some of dots also join to form smudges.

Same technique, (white paint), I have used to create a star effect on my CTA baseboards.

Will put up a photo tomorrow.

David,Anla-Shok' - Thanks for the comment. I have another three hvy cruisers to paint, pluss the rest of the fleet, so certainly have some room to experiment.
